3861 Danish Crown reports increase in net profit The Group ended the strongest-ever six-month period in its history, with profit rising by 46%, but is going to be hit by the COVID-19 crisis.
The first six-months period of the fiscal year 2019/2020 was the strongest reported in Danish Crown's history, said the company in a press release. However, soon after that, the COVID-19 crisis has started to erode the company's financial reserves, stated Jais Valeur, Group CEO, Danish Crown.
More or less simultaneously with the end of the first half of our 2019/20 financial year, the corona crisis began to impact settlement prices for the company’s owners.
“We’ve had a very strong first half with broadly based progress, building on a combination of continuing strong sales of pork to China, the divestment of Tulip Ltd. in the UK and, not least, overall strong Group performance. No one can take that away from us, but right now we’re dedicating all our resources to steering Danish Crown safely through the coronavirus crisis,” said Jais Valeur, Group CEO of Danish Crown.

Revenue was up 18% from DKK 26,987 million (€3.6 billion) in 2018/19 to DKK 31,834 million (€4.2 billion) driven especially by an increase in the pork price. Operating profit increased by 43% from DKK 1,220 million (€163 million) to DKK 1,750 million (€234 million), while the net profit rose 46% from DKK 960 million (€128 million) to DKK 1,391 million (€186 million). Strong prices for pork in the Asian market have supported the company's financial performance.
“Obviously, our improvement is driven by our exports to China, but the platform we’ve built over the course of the years is starting to prove its worth. The breadth of our business and product portfolio is historically strong, and we are more diversified geographically as well as in terms of product categories than previously. This is important as it will ensure attractive settlement prices for our owners going forward,” said Jais Valeur.

In broad terms, Danish Crown Foods has succeeded in passing on the rising prices of pork to its selling prices. On the respective domestic markets in Sweden and Poland, KLS Ugglarps and Sokolow have witnessed strong demand for local products, consolidating their market positions. Improving its sales to the pharmaceuticals industry, DAT-Schaub contributed to continued revenue and earnings growth.

Unfortunately, the market for beef and veal remains challenged with prices remaining stable, but at a low level. While Danish Crown Beef generally experienced operational improvements, the outbreak of COVID-19 has caused greater uncertainty.
The public lockdowns in most parts of the world in response to COVID-19 will impact on Danish Crown’s earnings in the second half of the year – not least the loss of sales to restaurants and other foodservice market players, which affects large parts of the food sector and causes market volatility.

Toward the end of the first half, beef prices were the first to be hit, and prices of pork were quick to follow. The pace of markets re-opening, especially in Europe, will determine when the markets will start to recover.
    Industry 2020-05-20 12:03:59 2025-08-01 22:48:05 Details Edit Delete
3471 US agricultural exports to China to double in a short time Under "Phase 1" trade deal, pork exports are expected to boom due to the shortage of pig meat in the Chinese market.
The first step in a trade deal between the US and China was presented last week and could speed up pork and beef exports in the Asian country, according to analysts and Washington officials. "They're ... going to double our exports to China," National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow mentioned in an interview for Fox television.
Under the trade agreement announced last week, Washington will reduce some tariffs on Chinese imports in exchange for Chinese purchases of agricultural, manufactured and energy products increasing by about $20 billion over the next two years.

While U.S. officials have touted the deal, Chinese officials have been more cautious, emphasizing that the trade dispute has not been completely settled. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer mentioned that a date for senior US and Chinese officials' signing of the accord has not yet been determined.
Nevertheless, the shortage of animal protein in the Chinese market leads to the idea of higher volumes of pork and beef imported from the US, with a special focus on pork. In the last four weeks, the volume of US pork exports to China was of 54,000 tonnes, despite tariffs ranging up to 70%.
"This is almost 3 times the level of 4-weeks pork exports to China averaged in the first 6 months of 2019. Year to date US exports to China are 316,000 tonnes, up 1236% over 2018. We expect as JBS and Tyson get Ractopamine free in January, that weekly exports to China could surpass 20,000 tonnes a week, equal to about 200,000 hogs in equivalency. We expect Canada to return to the export levels it had prior to the June China ban. That would be another 10,000 tonnes a week to China. Combined U.S. and Canada - 30,000 tonnes a week (300,000 hogs equivalency per week? Big number and would be approaching 15-20% of total U.S./Canada pork slaughter equivalency," said Jim Long, President and CEO, Genesus Inc.
Due to the ASF situation in China, the national swine inventory has dropped by 50%. A further decline is expected in 2020 creating a larger deficit of animal protein in the market.
    Industry 2019-12-17 06:01:03 2025-08-01 14:53:26 Details Edit Delete

3049 Global poultry market improves but fragility remains Increased demand from Asia and Africa have improved the outlook for poultry producers and the bullish Chinese market situation will have some impact on global markets, believes Rabobank analyst.
The first three months of 2019 wasn't the greatest season for poultry producers around the world as the volumes traded in the global market stood at 2.8 million tonnes, their lowest since 2015, considers Nan-Dirk Mulder, senior animal protein analyst at Rabobank. Nevertheless, the ASF situation in Asia has improved the global market outlook for poultry in the second quarter of 2019 as countries affected by the virus such as China and Vietnam are shifting consumption from pork to other animal protein.
"The balance in the market is gradually returning, driven by stronger dark meat demand from Asia and Africa. Having said this, global trade volumes in Q1 2019 were just 2.8m metric tons, and at their lowest since 2015, indicating ongoing tough issues in poultry trade and ongoing low breast meat prices.

The bullish Chinese market situation will have some impact on global markets. This will mainly be through some price support in pork exporting countries. But, as long as China does not allow more imports, this will have a relatively limited impact on global poultry trade, except for countries who can export, such as Brazil, Thailand and Argentina and soon Russia,", mentioned the analyst in the bank's quarterly report.
Avian Influenza cases are lower than a year ago but outbreaks are still present in countries such as Mexico, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal and Taiwan, impacting local industries and communities.
A more balanced supply in key trading markets like Brazil Thailand, the US and the EU had a positive impact in the global poultry market but trade issues between the largest actors in the market are keeping a fragile outlook for the rest of the year.
For now, China is the best performing poultry industry, with exceptionally high poultry prices due to the shift from pork to poultry as a result of the worsening situation with African Swine Fever (ASF) and very low breeding stock levels, which has pushed PS and DOC prices up to historically high levels, according to the report.
    Industry 2019-07-01 00:56:35 2025-08-01 19:17:20 Details Edit Delete
1591 FAO and China join forces to reduce the risk of cross-border animal disease The operation is targeting an important part of Asia, a region where 65% of the world's pork population is concentrated.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has entered into a three-way partnership with China and five other countries in Southeast Asia to limit the spread of trans-boundary animal diseases.
The veterinary mission is concentrated in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), a part of Asia that includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Veterinary institutes and animal health authorities will work along with Chinese and FAO experts to limit the damage animal diseases including those with high economic impacts such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and swine diseases, including Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome (PRRS) and Classical Swine Fever (CSF). These diseases and their spread, particularly from FMD, have amounted to billions of dollars in losses annually for the region. In one study, the benefits of an effective FMD control and eradication programme in Southeast Asia were estimated to exceed US$ 70 million.
Also, approximately 65% of the world’s pig population is concentrated in Asia and with an increasing demand for pork and pork products in the region, the socio-economic impact of swine diseases is higher than ever before.

China is the most important partner for FAO's programmes in the region, with a trust fund of $80 million. "There is clearly a need to move forward with increased trans-boundary animal disease control in this region, and FAO is very pleased to be working with China and the GMS countries to help control the spread of transboundary animal diseases", said Kundhavi Kadiresan, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific.
The new project, valued at roughly US$ 3 million, will involve the Ministries of Agriculture from China and the other five GMS countries. The work will include a programme of vaccination, animal movement control, quarantine, public awareness campaigns, enhanced surveillance and reporting and coordination among trading partners. Recently, Vietnam announced its first shipment of fresh pork to Myanmar.
    Industry 2018-07-13 12:34:26 2025-08-01 18:48:08 Details Edit Delete
2726 FAO recommends Vietnam to declare ASF outbreak as a national emergency "The loss of pigs due to ASF infection and control measures leads to a heavy economic burden to many rural families", concluded an international team of experts.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), conducted an emergency response mission from 11 – 15 March 2019 in Vietnam to enhance the country’s ability to respond to and prevent further spread of African Swine Fever (ASF).
The mission team included experts on ASF, emergency management, Depopulation, Disposal and Decontamination (3D), the swine industry and technical staff from the Vietnam Department of Animal Health (DAH) and FAO Vietnam. "The Department of Livestock Production (DLP) estimated over 2.5 million households in Vietnam are currently actively engaged in pig farming. As such, the loss of pigs due to ASF infection and control measures leads to a heavy economic burden to many rural families", declared Albert T. Lieberg, FAO representative in Vietnam.
The virus was first detected in the country about a month ago and is probably originated from China. By now, ASF virus has been reported in 17 provinces of the country, with 239 outbreaks. The pig population in the country is estimated at 30 million animals and pork accounts for three-quarters of total meat consumption in Vietnam. Vietnam has been implementing strict movement control of pigs and pig products and culled more than 25,000. Although the local government authorities have been implementing strict movement control of pigs and pig products from infected communes, mobilising their resources for pig culling and disposal, small pig farming models with low biosecurity and swill feeding still continue to facilitate ASF spread.
Some of the key actions recommended by the international team of experts included declaring the ASF outbreak as a national emergency, applying a zoning approach to prevent long-distance ASF spread and developing standard operating producers for swine depopulation and carcass disposal.

In Asia, the disease was reported for the first time in China in August 2018 but since then has spread very quickly to large parts of the country despite the efforts and measures implemented by the Chinese Veterinary Services. On 19 February 2019, Viet Nam announced the first ASF outbreaks in Thai Binh and Hung Yen provinces. Farmers in Asia have limited knowledge of this disease and its specific epidemiology having only recently been introduced to the region. Despite public awareness campaigns, most of the countries and stakeholders in Asia are unprepared for ASF introduction and spread, said FAO in a press release.
    Industry 2019-03-20 05:15:06 2025-07-31 20:11:28 Details Edit Delete

4683 Spanish food sector shows more resilience than other industries According to the Spanish Federation for Food and Beverages (FIAB), the sector maintains over 30,000 companies and 431,800 direct workers.
The food industry in Spain has been tested by the pandemic but proved more resilient than other industries. The Spanish F&B sector is still represented by more than 30,000 companies and 431,800 direct workers, according to data released by FIAB. However, experts within the industry argue that 2020 may represent the end of a six-year cycle of continuous growth in parameters such as production, the weight of added value, or job creation.

Household consumption is rising

Even so, the data place food and beverages as the industrial sector that has best withstood the threat of the pandemic, with a smaller drop than that of the manufacturing industry and the economy as a whole. “Food and beverage companies have been consolidating the foundations of a robust and stable industry for years. This effort has allowed the sector to better resist the strong impact of Covid-19 and to be in a position, with the impulse and public-private collaboration, to lead the change for the economic and social recovery of Spain ”, affirms the general director of FIAB, Mauricio García de Quevedo, quoted by the Retail Actual magazine.
As a result of the containment measures for the expansion of the coronavirus, the real production of the sector has totaled €129,854 million and reflects a decrease of -5.3% with respect to the results of the year 2019. However, this fall is situated well below the decline in the Spanish economy as a whole of -11%.
In line with production, the Gross Value Added has also experienced a decrease to €24.5 billion, that is, -8.37% lower than the 2019 records. The share of the GVA of food and beverages on the total economy has remained at around 2.4% and 14.75% of the total for the industry, which underlines the strategic nature of food and beverages.

A major part of this drop was caused by the restrictions imposed in the food service and hospitality areas. However, household consumption has registered a 16.15% rebound and reached €71.3 billion between the months of January and November, the latest data available. The confinement measures have raised the average per capita expenditure made at home to close to €1,610, a behavior that represents a growth of 19.0% in relation to the same period of the previous year.

Demand from China supports the Spanish meat industry

Exports of the Spanish meat industry in 2020 reached €33.9 billion, a 4.4% increase over the previous year. Although the strength of the Spanish sector abroad is demonstrated, this growth is strongly supported by the Chinese demand for meat products, without which, the industry would suffer from the oscillation of international markets and the limitations imposed by Covid-19.

As a result of the pandemic, the trade balance of the food and beverage industry was €12.6 billion, a considerable increase driven by a fall in imports. As a noteworthy data, the base of exporting companies increased by 1.3%. Although it does so at a lower rate than in 2019, this data acquires more value because it is situated in a difficult context for the viability of companies.
By markets, the EU continues to be the main destination and absorbs 54.9% of the Spanish food and beverage exports. The ranking is led by France (€4.9billion), followed by Portugal (€3.4 billion), Italy (€3.4 billion) and Germany (€1.8 billion). Outside the EU, it is worth highlighting the performance of China (€3.7 billion), which in the general classification ranks as the second trading partner due to the growth in demand for meat products; United Kingdom (€2.1 billion), already as a third country; and the United States (€1.8 billion).
    Market 2021-05-13 07:53:02 2025-08-01 03:19:04 Details Edit Delete

5888 Vion attracted considerable attention at EuroTier 2022 Last week, EuroTier was able to welcome back visitors for the first time since 2018.
The four-day trade fair for livestock farming and management is the world’s largest. And Vion Food Group’s participation was a resounding success. No matter whether farmers were looking to speak to our colleagues from Vion Farming, Der Grüne Weg or Vion Zucht- und Nutzvieh – our stand at the trade fair was overwhelmed with visitors from Tuesday morning to late Friday afternoon.

"In-depth conversations with long-standing partners as well as a large wave of new contacts above all demonstrated that after the distance imposed by Covid, farmers really want to speak to you. And Vion is one of the most important contacts for green issues as agriculture and the meat industry face up to similar challenges," says Dr Stephan Kruse, Business Development Director Farming in Germany. "It became clear that our farmers urgently expect a clear commitment to the future of livestock farming in Germany, but also from our federal government. The unanimous tenor was that, with regard to 'Transforming Animal Farming' - the motto of this year’s fair - a time was once again missed."

Many trade visitors took EuroTier as a welcome invitation to speak with Der Grüne Weg, one of the most experienced and largest organic meat producers in Europe. “Yet again, around twenty-five per cent of trade fair visitors came from the Netherlands. I’m especially pleased that my notebook was mostly filled with promising German contacts and concrete items for my to-do list over the next few days as early as halfway through the trade fair," says Daan Tomesen, project manager Livestock at Der Grüne Weg.

Dr Holger Looft and Stefan Frerichs, the managing directors of Vion Zucht- und Nutzvieh, were also well-received by the agricultural side. The Vion subsidiary’s takeover of the long-standing Hausner company had been announced just days before the trade fair. "The partners we spoke to from southern Germany were especially impressed that we were able to take over the reins when one of the largest livestock traders active in a region with strong ties to the industry - in this case in Saxony and Bavaria - announced that it wanted to leave its business in good hands," says Holger Looft.
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2022-11-24 04:02:36 2025-08-01 06:50:10 Details Edit Delete
3946 Despite plant closures, pig prices in France show resilience The average price has declined only in the last two months of H1, says a Genesus report.
The French average price for pigs have been resilient from January to the end of April, increasing the profit for farmers, shows a recent report from Genesus Inc. According to Philippe Malletroit, the company's Director for France, "over the first 6 months of 2020, the market price average was slightly higher than last year, despite an unprecedented health situation (Covid-19) that has had a strong impact on the consumption habits of the consumers". Prices been 24% to 30% higher in the first quarter and have dropped below the average recorded last year only in the months of May and June, with - 6.52 % and - 11.74 % respectively. The most significant of those was the outbreak reported in Kermene packing plant in Brittany. The plant has a weekly capacity of 40,000 head but it didn't disturb the supply chain in a significant way. Instead, the carcass weights increased to over 97 kg, due to the lack of removal on the farms. However, since mid-June, the plant is working at full capacity again. In June (week 23 to 26) the number of pigs slaughtered was slightly higher than in June 2019, with an average carcass weight of 1.28 kg. For the summer, pig prices in France may increase, although there are certain concerns regarding the situation in Germany at Rheda slaughterhouse, owned by Tonnies. "Since the lockdown is complete in France and with restaurants reopening, the situation should gradually return to normal and we can expect a pork price increase for summer. Nevertheless, there is concern about the temporary closure of one of the largest German and European packing plant, Tonnies slaughterhouse in Rheda. This closure will certainly have a negative impact on pigs harvesting on the German and European markets," commented Mr Malletroit.
    Market 2020-07-06 10:05:00 2025-08-01 19:56:59 Details Edit Delete
1191 French pig producers are affected by low prices and a sectorial labour shortage Pork prices in April are down by 30% compared to the same period in 2017 and they are close to 2008-2009 levels.
The French market for pork is confronted with a decrease of prices by almost 30%, as reported by Philippe Malletroit, Director France, Genesus Inc.
"Beginning of April 2018 price for a piglet was €25.44 compared to €36.91 same period last year. The average price for a 25 kg feeder pig was €1.64 per kg compared to €2.32 same period last year (that is €17 cheaper than 1 year ago). We also find these low prices for finisher pigs, where the average for the month of April 2018 is €1.190 per kg. When we compare the average price for April over the last 10 years, we can see that it is positioned around €1.306", he wrote in his report.
From that perspective, it seems that there are no sunny days for the pig producers in France even as the barbecue season could increase the demand in the domestic market.
Still, there are other problems that this sector must respond in the future and one of those is the labour shortage in this field.
As Mr Malletroit observed pig producers in France are running their farms on the same old "family enterprise" model which is not responding to the expectations of the younger generation.
"For many years, typical pig farming (like many other productions) was based on a family model, where husband, wife and (or) parents were involved in the business, and nobody counted their hours of work. Today, even though this model still continues, the size of livestock herds have increased in recent years in France, from an average size of farrow-to-finish of 107 sows in 1995 to approximately 200 sows in 2018.
What’s more, life expectations are different today especially among the younger generation, and no one is ready to become a slave to his livestock by working 7 days a week without ever taking a rest. In a recent study by the producer’s organization, one of the main motivations for the farmers was to hire employees. 7462 Lidl is taking the next step in terms of animal welfare Lidl in Germany is consistently committed to optimizing animal welfare and sustainability in meat production. By the end of 2030, the fresh discounter will not only convert its chilled fresh meat products, but also all sausage products to at least husbandry levels 3 and 4, provided that sufficient product availability is guaranteed.
The fresh discounter is now taking the next step: by the end of 2025, half of the sausage range of its own brand "Metzgerfrisch" is to meet the requirements of the highest husbandry levels 3 and 4. By the end of this year, 30 percent of Metzgerfrisch sausage products will be converted to the higher husbandry levels.

The fresh discounter continues to rely on a comprehensive 5xD offer: birth, rearing, fattening, slaughter and processing for sausage products and own-brand fresh meat must take place in Germany. This step underlines the food retailer's goal of shaping the transformation process towards higher animal welfare standards together with everyone involved in the value chain. Lidl is thus sending a clear message in Germany: domestic raw material origin is an important prerequisite for establishing higher animal welfare standards.

"The decision to convert our sausage products to the higher levels of husbandry 3 and 4, in addition to our meat products, marks a significant step in the expansion of our animal welfare promise. The changeover is accompanied by whole-animal marketing, so that all parts of an animal are processed. In this way, we enable agricultural companies to achieve maximum added value and secure sales channels for their high-quality products", says Christoph Graf, Managing Director of Goods at Lidl Dienstleistung GmbH & Co. KG.

At the beginning of this year, Lidl in Germany announced that it would increase the proportion of its fresh meat range with at least husbandry level 3 from the current level of more than 33 percent to 50 percent by 2025. As part of this, the food retailer has introduced its own animal welfare label for its own brands, which shows that the products have been produced in compliance with the highest animal welfare and environmental standards. All products in husbandry level 3 are labeled "Fair husbandry - for the welfare of animals".
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-06-20 00:20:44 2025-08-01 19:41:02 Details Edit Delete

7174 Germany: Lidl is setting new goals for higher levels of husbandry Lidl in Germany has already achieved its goal of converting at least 33% of its own-brand fresh meat range to husbandry levels 3 and 4 by 2026. By the end of the year, 40% will have switched to these higher husbandry levels.
The fresh meat discounter is now taking the next step and increasing the proportion of its fresh meat range with at least husbandry level 3 to 50% by 2025. Analogous to the successful conversion of the fresh beef range to higher farming methods, the fresh discounter is relying on a comprehensive 5xD range. As early as 2022, Lidl introduced sausage products and fresh meat from pigs, cattle and poultry in all over 3,250 stores in Germany under its own brand "Metzgerfrisch", which is born, reared, fattened, slaughtered and processed in Germany.

"This important step in the further development of our range shows that animal welfare is an important issue for our customers and for us, which is why we implement it consistently. We are confident that the proportion of husbandry levels 3 and 4 can be increased to 100% for all animal species by 2030 if sufficient product availability is guaranteed. The goods that are converted to husbandry level 3 continue to come entirely from local agriculture. However, politics must also create the prerequisites for the restructuring of animal husbandry and towards higher levels of husbandry", says Christoph Graf, managing director of goods at Lidl Service GmbH & Co. KG.

In the area of animal health, the fresh discounter also takes a pioneering position and, together with its partners, has defined mandatory requirements and additional criteria with which animal health in the broiler area can be significantly improved. The criteria are derived from the four focus areas of antibiotic use, animal health index, training and animal transport. By complying with the criteria, all Lidl partner companies will commit themselves, among other things, to continuously reducing their use of antibiotics in the future. By collecting additional animal health parameters, necessary measures to improve animal health on individual farms can be taken more quickly in the future and more qualified statements can be made about rearing. In addition, farms that exceed limit values for certain animal health parameters or in the use of antibiotics will take part in specific training courses in the future. In the area of animal transport, partner companies undertake to at least halve their maximum transport time compared to the legal maximum and to carry out animal transport more gently on warm days through additional measures.

Lidl in Germany is aware that a transformation from the producer level to the shelf only works if there is sufficient planning security. For this reason, the supplier will increasingly enter into long-term contracts to ensure a purchase guarantee. In addition, Lidl advocates for comprehensive legal origin labeling and supports the work of the Central Trade-Agriculture Coordination (ZKHL) to introduce origin labeling in Germany.

The fresh discounter demonstrates its commitment to even higher animal welfare standards and local goods with its own animal welfare label for its own brands at husbandry level 3. From now on, fresh beef products from husbandry level 3 will be labeled with the new label "Fair Husbandry - For the Good of the Animals" in all 3,250 Lidl stores in Germany. The label developed by Lidl in Germany indicates that the products were produced in compliance with the highest animal welfare and environmental standards. The label is based on the criteria of husbandry level 3. In addition, the beef products awarded with the label come 100% from German agriculture and, through a contractual commitment to the partner companies, ensure financial compensation for the additional costs incurred as well as improved planning security for the agricultural companies. In the future, the "Fair Husbandry - For the Good of the Animals" label will mark all products of husbandry level 3 in the Lidl range across all animal species. In addition, all items marked with the label require a passed audit according to the criteria of the Animal Welfare Initiative. The fresh discounter will continue to commit to the successful value-added program developed jointly in the industry in the future.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-03-05 00:20:22 2025-08-01 21:23:52 Details Edit Delete
