So far, 55% of Minerva's beef exports are shipped to these regions. SALIC may purchase as much as 25,000 tons of Minerva’s products a year, the meatpacker said. 1356 | It's all about the income! USMEF is targeting Northern Europe for its beef | The Scandinavian countries have raised the interest of the American beef industry thanks to the high income reported in the region. |
US beef was part of the show put on stage by US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) during the GastroNord trade fair in Sweden.
USMEF promoters in the area are considering expanding the presence of the American beef in Sweden, Finland and Denmark. GastroNord is the largest food and beverage industry trade show in northern Europe, where Sweden is already the largest market for US beef in the area.
"It should be noted that Sweden’s HRI and retail sectors have a very high penetration of U.S. beef, which is visible at white tablecloth restaurants, burger joints, diners and regular retail outlets", said Yuri Barutkin, USMEF representative in the EU.
The future plans for promoting US beef in Scandinavia are based on the demographics and the income reported by the Northern European countries. "Host country Sweden has a population of 10 million and one of the highest living standards in the world. In fact, all countries in Northern Europe – Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland – have very high disposable incomes and standards of living. Because of that, U.S. beef – a rather expensive, niche product for Europe in general – has a large target audience.", added Barutkin.
He also noted that the consumers in the Scandinavian region are paying more attention. to antibiotic use in U.S. cattle production, animal welfare issues and environmental impact. "It is important that we address those issues in our campaigns in these markets, and proactively pass that information on to our partners and distributors.", explained Yuri Barutkin.
| 1 | Market | 2018-06-01 11:48:24 | 2025-08-10 15:29:38 | Details Edit Delete | ||

3775 | Vietnam is heading for large-scale poultry enterprises | The SE Asian country is saying goodbye to small-scale domestic husbandry and the wet market in favor of professional farming and industrial processing. |
The Vietnamese poultry sector is rapidly reshaping its image and heads from small&medium enterprises to large-scale companies with the help of foreign investors included in joint ventures with local firms.
"There’s a clear trend for companies to enter into joint ventures to establish a vertically integrated production chain. Investors who have recently entered the market are developing large-scale projects using modern professional technology. Some Vietnamese projects are joint ventures with foreign companies such as De Heus. Other mostly large companies such as CP Vietnam already have poultry integrations in Vietnam but don’t yet have a processing plant," mentions Marel Poultry in a radiography of the Vietnamese poultry market.
De Heus Vietnam is one of the pioneering companies developing safe food value chains in Vietnam. De Heus and Vinh Anh have joined up to form the Green Chicken LLC company and are building a completely new broiler and duck processing plant. This facility is located in Ha Binh Phuong Industrial Park, Hanoi, and will employ more than 500 workers.
CP Vietnam is to establish a green-field poultry processing plant in the Binh Phuoc Province. It will feature two identical parallel processing lines with a capacity of 2x 6.000 bph [2x 100 bpm], which can be increased to 2 x 9.000 bph [2x 150 bpm].
For decades the domestic husbandry industry has produced poultry products mainly for the local market. Both units will be equipped with Marel technology

The market is, however, changing, as consumers now want better food safety. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has released a national plan for monitoring food safety for processed chicken. Minister of Agriculture Nguyen Xuan Cuong will help enterprises build processing facilities, which ensure veterinary hygiene and food safety. Target markets for Vietnamese firms exporting chicken meat include Japan, China, and the Philippines. Potential markets include Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and UAE. Poultry export figures reached more than $18 million in 2018. Today, both productivity and profits are increasing, turning poultry farming from a secondary occupation into the main job in agricultural production. Poultry numbers have increased by an average of more than 6% annually. In 2018, output exceeded 1.1 million tons of poultry meat.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-04-09 09:42:55 | 2025-08-11 12:07:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3809 | Thailand's poultry consumption down 50% | The SE Asian country looks for new export destinations as the domestic market is feeling the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. |
Poultry breeders and exporters are urging the Thai government to seal trade deals with the EU and UK in order to ease the access of poultry products in these markets. Currently, Thai officials are looking desperately to open new markets for poultry exports as domestic consumption has dropped by 50% in just a couple of months.
During the first couple of months of this year, Thai poultry exports have increased by 7.21%. However, the coronavirus outbreaks in Asia, the US, and the EU may result in a decline of 5% in exports. At the same time, the prices in the domestic market have decreased by 30%, threatening the profit of poultry farmers and processors.
Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit held discussions with private chicken meat providers and exporters such as CP, Betagro and Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association to evaluate the export situation.

They urged the ministry to seal free trade agreements with the EU and Britain, fixing chicken meat import quota at around 280,000 to 320,000 tonnes a year and to seek lower British import tariffs from US$1,000 a tonne, reported The Star newspaper.

The ministry also was asked to seek new markets in Japan and to lobby China to approve Thai processed-chicken factories in order to export processed products and expand the duck meat market. The private sector requested the ministry to establish new markets in South Korea, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan.
For the Thai poultry producers, Japan, Britain, China, Netherlands and South Korea are seen as key export markets for chicken meat. However, exporters believe that they could increase their presence in markets such as the US, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, Sweden, Germany, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, France, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Iraq, Angola, South Africa, Philippines and Taiwan. Chicken meat production in Thailand reached 2.86 million tonnes last year, ranking the country as the world's eight largest producer. Around 40% of the production was exported.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-04-24 07:50:42 | 2025-08-11 10:45:51 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1196 | The Sainsbury's-Asda merger would create a new rival for Tesco | The seafood competition in the United Kingdom is to increase after the deal between the two retailers will be completed successfully. |
There are no clear details about the amount that sits behind the merger of Sainsbury's and Asda but this move would certainly increase the competition in the UK's seafood retail sector.
Despite a decrease in the volume of sales, last year, the British seafood market has grown in value by 4.1% reaching a total of £3.3 billion (€3.7 billion/$4.5 billion), according to a Nielsen report quoted by Intra Fish portal.
The biggest market share in this sector is held by Tesco (23.1%) followed by Sainsbury's (15.1%), Aldi (9.7%), Morrisons (9.1%), Asda (8.0%) and other players. The simple math indicates that a merger between the second and the fifth player in this market will create a competitor with the same market share as Tesco's.
Following the same logic, it looks like the competition will be interesting to watch as the rivalry goes on equal footing in the chilled seafood sector and it gives Tesco an advantage of 2.7% on frozen seafood sales while a Sainsbury's-Asda merger will have a plus of 3% in the ambient seafood market.
| 1 | Retail | 2018-05-02 13:12:50 | 2025-08-09 07:24:25 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5035 | The seal is granted after an audit is made on all phases of production: from gestation, weaning, breeding, and fattening, to the slaughterhouse and the meat industry. |
Progressively, the consumers’ concerns for the animal welfare of the products they consume are growing, demanding products with higher sustainability, animal welfare and food safety. To achieve these goals, Spanish farmers continue working much beyond what is required, being aware that the best quality of life provided to animals means a higher quality of products for consumers.
In this sense, no certification is as complete as the Animal Welfare and Biosecurity Technical Regulation INTERPORC ANIMAL WELFARE SPAIN (IAWS) and its corresponding 'Welfare Commitment Certified'certification seal, which has been created in collaboration with sector companies, certification bodies, administration, scientists and experts in animal welfare, endorsed by a high-level independent Scientific Committee and whose transparency has been tested and validated by animal rights organizations.
'Welfare Commitment Certified' guarantees to consumers a complete Farm to Fork traceability and is certified by independent certification bodies in all production phases -from gestation, weaning, breeding and fattening, to the slaughterhouse and the meat industry-, so that only after auditing all the phases is it possible to grant the seal.
In terms of food safety, it is mandatory as a prerequisite for slaughterhouses and food industries that wish to achieve the certificate to obtain one of the most recognized international certifications in food safety (IFS, BRC or FSSC22000). Through these standards, the IAWS seal guarantees that the pork meat industry carries out all the necessary precautions to sell a safe product.
Furthermore, by being aligned with the main conclusions of the animal welfare labeling sub-group of the EU Animal Welfare Platform, which assists the Commission by collecting experiences and opinions regarding information to consumers on animal welfare, guarantees to consumers its compliance with the future demands that are coming from Europe.
Thanks to the sector’s animal welfare seal, Spanish pork farms, transport vehicles, slaughterhouses and industries have included animal welfare as an essential element of their work model, being aware not only of the benefit it represents throughout the value chain that an animal is healthy, but also that they must respond and anticipate consumer demands.
For more information, please check our website: https://www.bienestaranimalcertificado.com/animal-welfare-certified/
| 1 | Industry | 2021-10-26 06:08:18 | 2025-08-11 08:25:37 | Details Edit Delete | |||

1750 | Norwegian salmon exports to grow further | The second half of 2018 could bring better results in sales in the EU market but also a stronger competition against Chile. |
The volume of Norwegian salmon exports in the first half of the year reached 556,000 tonnes with a value of $3.9 billion. There was an increase of 7% in volume and 4% in value compared to the same period of 2017, reports the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Salmon exports could grow further believes analyst Paul T. Aandahl, but there is a stronger competition in several markets.
"Several factors have contributed positively to this record half-year. Currency is one of them. The Norwegian kroner depreciated on average by 5% against the euro, but against the US dollar, the kroner increased by about 7%. Since the EU territories account for two-thirds of Norwegian salmon, Norway´s export results remain positive", explained Aandhal.
Even if Norway has managed to increase its market share within EU, in other markets, there is a strong competition from exporters such as Chile. "Assuming that half of the trade goes to Euro markets and the rest of exports are to dollar markets, the value is about 4%. This indicates continued growth in demand globally. Chile is the country that has shown the highest growth in export volumes, with an estimated increase of 35% or 80,000 tonnes", confirmed the analyst. The trend in export statistics indicates a projected increase of 8,000 tonnes from Canada, while the UK is expected to reduce exports by 14,000 tonnes.
Chilean salmon is making its way in markets such as USA, Turkey, Ukraine or Asia challenging Norwegian products. The trend in global trade statistics indicates an increase in the supply of salmon to Asia of 18% and most of this growth appears to have come from Chile (+67%), Canada (+489%) and the Faroe Islands (+56%). For the rest of the year, Aandhal expects that the US and Asia to increase the demand for salmon products. Regarding the competitors from Chile and Faroe Islands, the analyst believes that they will rather focus on Russia, where Norwegian salmon is banned, and that could represent an opportunity for Norwegian exporters to strengthen their position in other markets.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-08-10 07:03:44 | 2025-08-11 09:41:04 | Details Edit Delete | ||

Teams of two people from eight companies will enter this session in order to learn how to move their business potential forward by 12 to 18 months.
"In Bergen, we had eight start-ups from seven countries, which went through 30 mentor sessions, met 40 investors from 17 different countries, and got investor-ready in 90 days. Two of the companies came away with six-figure investments and a very clear idea of where they were headed in the aquaculture world. All of the companies were delighted with the development experience, unparalleled international networking, and business and investment opportunities they gained", added Murphy referring to the first session.
This year’s program is set to take place in Cork, Ireland, and the organizers hope that at least half of the slots will be filled with Irish applicants.
In addition to the benefits gained from participating in the program, companies receive € 25,000 ($28,500) in cash. In return for the whole package, Hatch, which was founded by Alimentos Ventures, an aquaculture-specific venture capital fund in 2017, takes an 8% equity stake.

At the end of the program, each company makes a presentation to a selected audience of investors, corporate partners and press, and also has the opportunity to pitch to Hatch’s follow-on fund, which typically invests between €100,000 to 1 million ($114,000 to 1.14 million) in those showing high potential.

Free office space is available for participants for up to nine months post-program, with Hatch continuing to play a hands-on role assisting participants to navigate the minefield of raising financial backing, sorting out business propositions, arranging agreements with shareholders and investors, and finding customers.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-08-22 12:25:33 | 2025-08-10 23:18:14 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1554 | US pork producers turned into casualties of trade wars | The second wave of taxes applied by China and Mexico is threatening the pork industry in the US. |
China and Mexico have imposed additional taxes on US pork products and the industry is anticipating heavy winds ahead.
Mexico has doubled the duties to 20% for pork, while China seems to be a forbidden land with taxes that reach 81% in value, of which 10% is represented by VAT.
"At 81 percent net tariff, you're not moving any pork product into China.I would suspect by the end of the year, hog producers will be losing quite a bit of money. Part of it is just surplus pork on the market. We've been in an expansion mode", declared Christine McCracken, executive director of animal protein at Rabobank, for CNBC.
By now, 25% of the pork production in the US was sold on the external markets, Mexico and China being top buyers. A new set of duties announced in the spring by president Trump on imported steel and aluminium have led to a trade war with foreign partners and many producers are now worried about what lies ahead.
"It's really tough and we had anticipated a decent 2018-19. This is only the second time we've had red ink 37 years in the business. We want to compete and be able to sell abroad and make sure our government knocks down trade barriers. All we've accomplished is getting more trade barriers. We are the casualty and predicted it from day one", declared Ken Maschhoff, chairman of Maschhoff Family Foods and co-owner of the nation's largest family-owned pork producer.
The losses for the industry may reach $2 billion annually in the Chinese market alone, according to experts. "Mexico and China are about 40% of total exports, so those are critical markets and it's a significant concern with U.S. pork," said Jim Monroe, a spokesman for the National Pork Producers Council, who also predicts significant financial problems for the industry.
Last year, China's pork imports from the US reached a value of $1.1 billion and Mexico accounted for $1.5 billion, according to US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) statistics.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-06 16:19:18 | 2025-08-11 08:35:53 | Details Edit Delete | ||
620 | Thailand's pig industry is slowly stepping out of the crisis | The second week of 2018 brought an increase in price for the live animals |
Thai pig industry is slowly recovering from a price crises that affected producers all over the country. Pig prices in Thailand edged higher in the second week of January 2018 to THB 45-50/kg (USD 1.36 – 1.52) live after it was at THB 30-35/kg (USD 0.9 – 1.0) in December 2017. This a sign of the fixing the oversupply that unbalanced the market in the last year, considers Paul Anderson, Genesus Director for South-East Asia Market, in a recent analysis.

At the end of the fiscal year 2017, in September, official data from Thailand referring to pig production in the country mentioned 10,191,784 pigs during September 2016 – 2017. The number is divided into native pigs 650,972 heads, terminal boars 73,493 heads, sows 861,553 heads and commercial pigs 8,605,766 heads.

Many of the producers have adapted to new selling techniques offering portioned pork directly to customers and end-users in order to reduce their losses. Despite the decrease in prices in live pigs, retail prices remain unchanged, particularly in high-value cuts such as belly and loin, products that can minimize losses from live pig sales significantly. As an effect of this new strategy, the number of cutting plants and pork shops across Thailand has multiplied.

At this point, the price for live pigs are under the cost of production, which is estimated to be around THB 50/kg (USD 1.52) but the forecast for 2018 estimated that the price would surpass this level in the second or third quarter of the year.

The secondary effect that took place in Thai pork market was the tendency to slaughter heavier pigs. Average slaughter weight in the country ranges from 95-100kg but the crisis has pushed the slaughter weight at 115-120kg.

(Photo source: Pixabay)
| 1 | Market | 2018-01-17 10:06:38 | 2025-08-10 00:01:12 | Details Edit Delete | ||
