3977 6% decrease in pork consumption in Spain, 2% in Italy The crisis in hospitality will not severely damage the pork industries in both countries, according to Rabobank.
The lockdown impact and a slow recovery in tourism will have just a small impact in pork consumption in Spain and Italy, according to the latest Rabobank report. The number of visitors from June to September will decrease by 38%-39%, which will have implications for both retail traffic and foodservice, leading to a reduction in pork consumption. Specifically, it is believed that the loss in foodservice traffic will be 8% in Spain and 5% in Italy. In retail, the loss amounts to 4% and 2% in Spain and Italy, respectively. The impact on foodservice and retail trade translates into a decrease in consumption of 6% (63,000 tonnes) in Spain and 2% (22,000 tonnes) in Italy, considering the total volume of sales in 2019. For the Spanish pork industry, the drop in sales is not the largest recorded in the last 15 years. In 2009, during the financial crisis, pork consumption in Spain dropped by 222,000 tonnes. Last year, volumes put in the domestic market were 228,000 tonnes due to increased demand in the export markets. For Italy, a reduction of 22,000 tonnes in pork consumption is also considered limited.
    Industry 2020-07-21 09:25:50 2025-08-06 17:34:33 Details Edit Delete

4679 Saudi Arabia bans poultry imports from Brazil 11 plants are targeted in a unilateral move that will be applied from May 23.
One of the long-time importers of Brazilian poultry products, Saudi Arabia, has decided to ban poultry imports from 11 plants located in the South American country. The decision is to be applied on May 23. A joint statement from Brazil's Agriculture and Foreign ministries last week confirmed that there were no warnings or explanations for this decision. "The Brazilian government was surprised and dismayed by Saudi Arabia's decision to suspend 11 poultry exporting units. There was no prior contact from the Saudi authorities, nor did they give any motivation or justification to support the suspensions", said the joint statement.JBS, the world's largest meat company, confirmed that it was affected by the ban but declined to disclose how many plants had been targeted by the decision, according to Reuters. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority said imports from seven JBS plants will be suspended as of May 23. BRF, la largest chicken meat processor in Brazil, declared that none of its units were affected by the ban.
The Brazilian government said it has initiated talks with Saudi Arabia regarding the bans. The Brazilian government said it learned of the suspensions through the publication of a new list of Brazilian plants permitted to export to Saudi Arabia.
    Market 2021-05-12 12:48:28 2025-08-06 17:34:38 Details Edit Delete
4509 5.1% increase in Spanish meat production in 2020 The slaughtering figures have dropped for most of the species except for pigs.
Spain reports a 5.1% increase in meat output for last year, despite the fact that slaughtering figures have dropped for almost all species with one exception: pigs. Increased demand for pork in China, the main market for Spanish pig meat, has raised the slaughtering figures by 6.57%, to 56,461,218 head, according to official data released by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA). Also, the weight was higher than usual favoring a rise of 8.24% in pig meat production (5,023,534 tonnes).
Overall, Spanish meat production during 2020 totaled 7,603,932 tons due to a rise in pig meat and poultry output (0.74%). Nevertheless, the number of birds slaughtered has dropped by 2.04% to 800,615, 356. For the rest of the species the were slight decreases in both slaughtering figures and meat output:
- cattle 2,444,480 head (-2.64%) , with a total production of 677,295 tonnes (-2.57%).
- goat 1,202,083 head (-7.77%), totaling 10,160 tonnes (-2.50%).
- sheep 9,456,150 head (- 6.00%), totaling 114,305 tonnes (- 5.30%).
- rabbit 40,743,739 head (-0.64%), with a total production of 51,229 tonnes (-1.75%).
The difference is represented by the horse meat production, 9,530 tonnes (-1.05%) from 36,949 animals. 5213 5 bird flu cases in wild birds trigger alert for the Spanish poultry industry Stricter biosecurity measures were announced in Catalonia as AI has already impacted the sector in other parts of Europe.
Catalonia has intensified the surveillance and protection of the Highly Pathogenicity Avian Influence (HPAI), H5N1, after confirming the presence of the virus in five wild birds located in Lerida. 4 swans and a stork were found dead last month in the area. Lab results confirming the infection with H5N1 virus have been released this week by the IRTA-CReSA laboratory.
For the last few years, Spain hasn't been hit by bird flu outbreaks and the country still has the status of ‘free of avian influenza’ and is free to export poultry and poultry products to third markets. Nevertheless, the virus is now present in poultry farms in Portugal and France and threatens to spread to the Spanish territory. Stricter measures have been adopted in the country including a ban on hunting wild geese or ducks, lockdown of birds in poultry farms, and protection of water tanks in these farms so it can not be accessible to wild birds.
As for Catalonia, a resolution is being prepared in which biosafety measures are extrapolated to all municipalities in Catalonia, beyond risk areas. This resolution, which will be signed in the coming days, will be in force from the day after publication until April 20, since it is during this period when the risk is highest due to the greater influx of migrated birds from the north of Europe.
    Industry 2022-01-11 11:33:01 2025-08-06 17:35:07 Details Edit Delete
5255 5% decline in China's pork imports for 2022 "Government support measures for Chinese pork producers are expected to increase the number of livestock and reduce imports this year" - IndexBox report.
China, the world’s largest pork market, imported 2.8M tonnes of pig meat worth $8B from January to August 2021, a recent report from IndexBox states. Compared to the same period a year earlier, the volume of imports remained nearly unchanged, while in value terms purchases grew by 3%. However, data offered by the General Administration of Customs show a downward trend for meat imports in the second half of 2021.
Pork supplies from the US dropped by 36% to 340K tonnes, while Spain and Brazil sharply boosted their exports to China. Against the same period of 2020, purchases from Spain increased by 70% to 900K tonnes or by 76% to $2.6B in value terms. Supplies from Brazil rose by 25% to 360K tonnes or 21% to $1.2B in monetary terms.
In 2022, China’s pork imports are projected to drop by 5% due to rising domestic pork production. The Chinese government is expected to support large pig farming companies to keep expanding their herds.

China’s Pork Imports Statistics - 2020

Pork imports into China soared from 2.0M tonnes in 2019 to 4.3M tonnes in 2020. In value terms, purchases skyrocketed from $4.5B to $11.9B. Spain (934K tonnes), the US (696K tonnes), and Brazil (481K tonnes) were the leading suppliers of pork to China, with a combined 49% share of total imports. In value terms, the largest pork suppliers to China were Spain ($2.7B), the US ($1.6B) and Brazil ($1.6B), with a combined 49% share of total supplies.
In 2020, the US recorded the highest shipment growth rate among the leading suppliers. Pork imports from America rose threefold in value terms. The average pork import price amounted to $2,761 per tonne in 2020, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the highest prices were recorded for prices from Brazil ($3,254 per tonne) and Denmark ($3,009 per tonne), while the costs for the US ($2,351 per tonne) and Canada ($2,369 per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

100% in self-sufficiency predicted

However, according to Jacek Strzelecki, a Polish market analyst, in 2022 China may reach 100% in pig meat self-sufficiency. "Pork production in China:
- 2021 96% self-sufficiency; 2022 100% self-sufficiency; 2023 102% self-sufficiency. Pig herd in China - forecast:
- 2022 - 504 million units;
- 2023 - 554 million units," said Mr. Strzelecki in a tweet. The effect will be felt by major players such as Brazil, Spain, the US and Canada.
    Market 2022-01-27 10:12:03 2025-08-06 17:35:25 Details Edit Delete
3384 47,000 pigs culled in South Korea The ASF virus may spread further as the rivers were contaminated with blood.
A massive culling operation of 47,000 pigs was carried by South Korean authorities over the weekend, near the North Korean border, in an attempt to contain the African Swine Fever from spreading into the country. However, the authorities have run out of plastic containers used to bury the pigs and blood was spilled into a river nearby, reports ABC channel, quoting local sources.
As a result, Imjin River, which runs through the demilitarized zone, has turned blood red. This is the seventh-largest river in Korea and the population in the area fears the disease may spread to other provinces.
Authorities dismissed such fears, saying the culled pigs were disinfected before being slaughtered. They also said emergency steps had been taken to prevent further pollution of the river. ASF was discovered recently in South Korea and biosecurity experts believe that the disease was carried by wild animals coming from North Korea. 13 cases have been reported so far in South Korea since September 17, when the first outbreak was reported.
The virus was discovered for the first time in Asia in August 2018, in an outbreak reported by China. Since then it has spread to Vietnam, Mongolia, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, East Timor, North Korea and South Korea and it is believed to be present in Indonesia aswell.
    Industry 2019-11-14 08:55:45 2025-08-06 17:35:37 Details Edit Delete
4536 43% increase in Iranian meat output A call for the government to support local producers is in place.

The Statistical Center of Iran (SCI) announced that production of red meat in Iran stood at 42,000 tonnes in the eleventh month of the current Iranian calendar year (January 20 – February 18), showing 43% growth compared to the same month in the past year. The SCI’s report said that beef and veal had the lion’s share in the country’s red meat output during the eleventh month with 24,100 tonnes, followed by lamb and mutton with 14,500 tonnes, goat meat with 2,500 tonnes, and red meat from other livestock with 918 tonmess.

The head of Iran’s Livestock Provision Council has called on the government to purchase the red meat at guaranteed prices to support the producers. Mansour Pourian has also recommended the exports of livestock to support the producers while bringing foreign revenue for the country, according to the Tehrannews neswpaper

Saying that the purchase of red meat at guaranteed prices started in the country in the middle of the fourth Iranian calendar month of Tir (early July, 2020), Pourian announced that 4,000 tons of red meat have been purchased in this way by the State Livestock Affairs Logistics Company since then.
The purchase of red meat at guaranteed prices is already done in 15 provinces, including Khorasan Razavi, North Khorasan, Gilan, Alborz, Yazd, Isfahan, Fars, Sistan-Baluchestan, Khuzestan, East Azarbaijan, and Semnan, he said, adding that it will be then conducted in the other provinces as well.

Iran’s deputy agriculture minister, Morteza Rezaei, has said that the total production of red and chicken meat is expected to reach 3.5 million tons by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20).
He said red meat production will reach 880,000 tons, while chicken meat output is expected to reach 2.7 million tons.

“Considering the measures taken, the egg production will reach 1,650,000 tons, the honey output will reach 113,000 tons, and the production of fresh silk cocoons will reach 1,650,000 tons”, the official added.
Pointing to the per capita consumption of protein products in the country, Rezaei said: “Currently the per capita consumption of red meat is 12.5 kilograms, chicken meat 31.25 kilograms, raw milk 124 kilograms, eggs 11.72 kilograms and honey 1.35 kilograms.”
Iran is among the leading consumers of red meat in the West Asia region with lamb being the most sought after.
However, the consumption per person is around a third of what is normally seen in countries like the US and Australia, mainly due to the prohibition of pork in Islamic law. The major part of Iran’s red meat imports comes from countries like Brazil, where Iranian supervisors directly control culling methods to ensure they comply with religious rules.

    Market 2021-03-15 13:29:21 2025-08-06 17:35:49 Details Edit Delete
6327 UK: Meat dishes remain a firm favourite in the out-of-home market Spend on meat free meals in the out of home market totalled £3.7bn in the year ending 22 January 2023, according to an analysis made by AHDB with data from Kantar. However, meat free meals still account for a relatively small proportion of spend in the out of home market, at 15.1%, highlighting how important meat, fish and poultry (MFP) is for driving value out of home.
The £3.7bn spent on meat free represents an increase of 23.1% year-on-year, slightly ahead of spend growth for MFP, at 17.3%. Penetration (the proportion of individuals consuming these meals) had previously been the key driver of growth for meat free, however this has now seen a plateau, with price driving growth, predominantly linked to inflation.

The proportion of households buying into meat free in the past year was 70.6% (52 w/e 22 Jan 2023). It’s key to remember that these meat-free meals incorporate dishes that just don’t include meat, but are still everyday meals (such as cheese sandwiches). Despite this, the penetration for MFP is still much higher, at 90.6%.

When it comes to the top dishes consumed, most are still MFP-driven, with 97% of burgers being meat/poultry based. Nearly nine in ten Asian-cuisine meals include MFP, while 80% of Indian-cuisine meals had MFP. In addition, repeat rates for meat-free are much lower, at 40%, than the 96% seen for MFP. This highlights how consumers find MFP to be a reliable option when out of home.

Amidst the cost-of-living backdrop, consumers will inevitably look for ways to save money. Vegetarian meals are competitively priced, but plant-based dishes do come at a premium to pork, beef and chicken.

Therefore, the main area of risk for the meat category, in the out of home market, isn’t meat alternatives, but rather dishes that are vegetarian by nature, such as cheese sandwiches and meat-free pizzas.

Health continues to be a key driver of Veganuary participation, and meat reduction overall. However, there isn’t a January increase in meat free meals, instead there are signs people choose to focus their Veganuary efforts in-home.

Once of the key differences between MFP and meat free meals in the out of home market is where they are consumed or bought. MFP meals are more likely to be bought in quick service restaurants, while coffee shops are an area where meat free takes a bigger share, linked to the role of vegetarian sandwiches.

As a consequence, within meat free, coffee shops and cafes have gained at the lunch occasion. However, people are still more likely to consume MFP for their main meal, which is typically a more expensive, bigger occasion. For MFP to maintain its importance in the OOH market, opportunities lie in further menu innovation.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-04-09 00:10:19 2025-08-06 17:35:52 Details Edit Delete

1565 The Mediterranean and the Black Sea, SE Pacific and SW Atlantic are the most unsustainable fisheries One-third of the major commercial fish species are being fished at biologically unsustainable levels, claims the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The amount of fish captured in the wild has levelled and the aquaculture expansion has slow down but the global fish production will continue to grow to 201 million tonnes in 2030, predicts FAO experts.
"The sector is not without its challenges, however, including the need to reduce the percentage of fish stocks fished beyond biological sustainability", declared FAO Director-General, Jose Graziano da Silva during the presentation of the latest edition of "The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture" report.
The current production level of fish is estimated at 171 million tonnes but only 59.9% of the major commercial fish species that FAO monitors are now being fished at biologically sustainable levels, while 33.1% are being fished at biologically unsustainable levels.
These figures are raising concerns about the development of the sector, considering that 40 years ago 90 % of FAO-monitored fisheries were being utilized at biologically sustainable levels, and just 10% were being fished unsustainably.
"The Mediterranean and the Black Sea, with 62.2%overfished stocks, the Southeast Pacific (61.5%), and Southwest Atlantic (58.8%) are the most unsustainable fisheries in the world", according to the report. Of the 171 million tonnes of fish produced in 2016, humans have consumed as food 151.2 million tonnes.
Aquaculture sector has delivered 80 million tonnes of fish, while marine captures have reached 79.3 million tonnes and freshwater capture stood at 11.6 million tonnes. 35% of global fish production has been exported, accounting for $143 billion dollars. 8157 Shoppers say British Lion increases trust in retailers New research has found that two thirds of shoppers would trust retailers more if they displayed the British Lion mark on pre-packed food containing eggs.
With very little information required on pack, 84% of consumers expect British-made food to be made with British ingredients, while 50% of shoppers do not trust the ingredients in popular supermarket foods such as quiches, sandwiches and scotch eggs, if there is no country of origin for major ingredients such as egg communicated on the packaging.

The research comes at a time when the volume of imported eggs is growing, despite significant increases in the size of the UK flock. 3691 4.2% increase in Ukrainian poultry exports The volumes shipped abroad in the first two months of 2020 have increased but the value was lower than a year before.
Poultry exports from Ukraine have increased in the first two months of the year, reaching 66,270 tonnes (+4.2%). However, the revenues are down by 7.1%, to $81.9 million, according to a report from the State Customs Service. The monetary impact was created by a ban for poultry products applied by the EU and China since January. These markets are the most valuable for the Ukrainian poultry industry, with the EU market taking 134,262 tonnes in 2019, up 8.6% compared to the previous year.
Exports to the EU have been resumed in March. From a global perspective, Ukraine is the world's sixth-largest producer of poultry, with a total production of 350,000 tonnes reported in 2019.
In terms of imports, Ukraine received last year 178,619 tonnes of poultry from the EU, becoming the third-largest export market for European poultry producers, behind the Philippines and Ghana.
    Industry 2020-03-16 08:59:51 2025-08-06 17:36:04 Details Edit Delete
8097 UK prepares law to remove deforestation-related products from supermarkets The UK government is to introduce legislation to ensure supermarkets remove products linked to illegal deforestation from their shelves, similar to legislation recently enacted in the European Union.
The proposed legislation would cover beef, soy, leather, palm oil and cocoa.

Companies with a global annual turnover of £50m (US$63m) and using more than 500 tonnes of regulated products a year would be banned from using them if they were sourced from illegally deforested land.

"Globally, we are losing forests equivalent to the size of about 30 football pitches every minute", Environment Secretary Steve Barclay said in a statement.

"We are cleaning up supply chains to ensure that large UK companies are not responsible for illegal deforestation", the minister said.

In the UK, the so-called Environment Bill has been in the works since 2020 and the key difference with the legislation passed by the EU this year is that it will ban trade in products grown on all recently deforested land anywhere in the world.

The proposed UK law will focus solely on illegal destruction of forest land.
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-01-16 00:20:03 2025-08-06 17:36:18 Details Edit Delete
5102 4% decline in UK beef production From January to October production figures have dropped every month, compared to the same period last year.
UK beef production for the first 10 months of 2021 is 742,000 tonnes, 4% lower than last year and there's no perspective of change for this year at least. The decline was observed every month and it could be a short-term trend for the sector. The UK produced 74,500 tonnes of beef in October, according to data from Defra. This was 500 tonnes more than in September, but 6,300 tonnes less than in October last year. Production has been running behind 2020 levels all year.

"The effects of the terrible spring in 2018 have been felt all year, in some ways delayed by the pandemic which supported demand for British cattle. In an effort to meet that demand, prime cattle have been slaughtered slightly younger over the past 18 months, but with maintained carcase weights. Market reports suggest that more recently, processor demand has been relatively well balanced with supplies, and stable prices for prime cattle at least would support this view," commented Duncan Wyatt, Lead Analyst - Red Meat, AHDB.
Prime cattle slaughter was 159,700 head in October, 13,000 lower than a year ago, with declines seen across steers (-9%), heifers (-7%), and young bulls (-1%). This brings prime slaughter for the year so far to 1.64m head, 4% fewer than in 2020 Prime carcase weights did slip slightly to 341.3kg in October, and have averaged 346.6kg in the year to date.

"61,800 cows were slaughtered in October, 4,650 fewer than in October last year. Given the prospect of sustained higher feed costs during the winter housing period, we might now expect cow slaughter to pick up. It has been behind 2020 levels since the summer. In the year to date 519,300 cows have been culled, 6% less than at the same point year ago", added Mr. Wyatt.
    Industry 2021-11-23 08:48:06 2025-08-06 17:36:34 Details Edit Delete
