2015 Jakarta live bird trade reaches 1 million per day The local government and international organizations are working hard to prevent bird flu outbreaks in the area.
High consumption of poultry in Indonesia raises a high risk of biosecurity as the live bird trade has gone up to 1 million per day solely in Jakarta.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the last 11 years, there have been 200 cases of Avian Influenza found in humans in Indonesia, which caused 168 deaths. The Greater Jakarta area recorded the highest number of the cases in Indonesia, which may be related to the high level of live poultry entering Jakarta, informs Tempo newspaper.
A health chicken programme supported by local authorities, UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been implemented in Jakarta in the last few years and it aims at restructuring the market chain by controlling the movement and trade of live poultry in the area.
"We do this to ensure Jakarta is free of avian influenza, and to provide safe and healthy poultry products for Jakarta residents", explained Anies Baswedan, Governor of Jakarta.
Stephen Rudgard, FAO Representative in Indonesia, explained that FAO has worked through the market restructuring program to help market actors and slaughterhouses to process poultry cleanly, to disinfect poultry transport vehicles, improve market cleanliness, and increase the awareness of poultry sellers and consumers. During the last 10 years, 10 locations of markets and other facilities in Jakarta have been assisted in a pilot project to implement biosecurity practice in the market and to be adopted by the local government to the market, according to local authorities.
    Industry 2018-10-08 09:16:46 2025-08-06 04:00:54 Details Edit Delete
2017 New Zealand lamb exports to stay at $1.96 billion Prices are expected to remain relatively steady in the main export markets.
The value of New Zealand's lamb exports is expected to remain at $1.9 billion in the fiscal year 2018-2019, according to an estimate from Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ).
Despite the fact that political uncertainties are still acting like disruptive elements in the global meat market, large-scale droughts and disease outbreaks in competing for animal proteins have created the premises of a positive outlook for New Zealand’s sheep sector.
"We forecast slight increases in farm-gate prices for lamb and mutton in 2018-19, as prices are expected to remain relatively steady in New Zealand’s main export markets and benefit from an expected easing of the New Zealand dollar. This follows the exceptionally strong average farm-gate prices for lamb and mutton in the 2017-18 season", explained B+LNZ chief economist Andrew Burtt.
A combination of tighter mutton supply from both Australia and New Zealand, who contribute the vast majority of international sheep meat trade, and growing global demand is expected to continue to drive an increase in the average export value of mutton, which influences lamb prices, reports Farmweek magazine.

New Zealand’s export lamb production is forecast to ease 1.7% due to a smaller lamb crop, which is the result of a fall in the number of breeding ewes this year as farmers took advantage of high mutton prices.

Mutton exports are also forecast to be down 17% because of the smaller and younger breeding ewe flock. More ewe hoggets were retained for breeding this year reflecting farmer confidence in sheep production going forward.
    Industry 2018-10-08 11:10:33 2025-08-05 16:52:10 Details Edit Delete
2018 SE Asian countries increase their beef imports Prices are surging in the region due to the ASF outbreaks in China and Europe.
Beef prices in South East Asia are on the rise as pork supply is limited in the region due to the ASF outbreaks in China and several EU countries, reports Beef Central magazine.
The Indonesian market is looking more attractive to Australian exporters since the prices have broken through the AU$ 4 per kg barrier for the first time in the last 16 months.
China and Vietnam have also reported an increase in livestock imports, with prices raising at AU$ 5.61/kg and AU$ 4.17/kg, respectively.
Chinese market fluctuation in live cattle is more visible when comparing prices from Beijing and Shanghai area to other provinces of the country. Due to the lack of pork in the market, retailers have already started to promote frozen beef in order to increase its consumption. The Philippines and Thailand are not far behind the AU$ 4 per kg barrier, with prices ranging from AU$ 3.72 to AU$ 3.98, noted a market report. The Chinese market, as well as the Indonesian and Philippines, are expected to increase their livestock and beef imports in the following months as the demand for animal protein is growing.
    Industry 2018-10-08 13:48:52 2025-08-06 03:24:23 Details Edit Delete
2019 Russia is betting on its aquaculture potential
Aquaculture may be a new industry developed in Russia but is starting to have a significant impact on the country's food security strategy. During a presentation held last month in Sankt Petersburg, Vasily Sokolov, the deputy head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Fisheries, mentioned that the target set for 2030 is of 700,000 tonnes of aquacultural products, informs Seafood Source magazine.
The ban on fish and seafood applied since 2014 helped the Russian aquaculture to develop at a faster pace even if the internal market is still flooded with ample wild-catch marine volumes (over 5 million MT for this year) and the lack of technology is creating problems for domestic producers.
Sokolov made the following forecasts for Russia’s aquaculture production: Whitefish will increase from 4,800 MT in 2017 to 7,000 MT in 2035; sturgeon will move from 3,200 MT in 2017 to 10,000 MT in 2035 and 20,000 in 2050; invertebrates (mostly shellfish) will increase from 4,300 MT in 2017 to 40,000 MT in 2035 and 100,000 MT in 2050; algae will go from 1,500 MT in 2017 to 15,000 MT in 2035, to 30,000 MT in 2050; and perch will hit 15,000 MT in 2035 and 150,000 MT in 2050.
A special focus is dedicated to shellfish and algae farming, with the government already setting incentives to attract private investors in the sector, mentioned the official. In 2017, the country’s aquaculture farms harvested nearly 186,000 MT of fish, consisting mainly of char, salmon, sturgeon, shrimp, and carp.
    Industry 2018-10-09 07:00:57 2025-08-06 03:30:45 Details Edit Delete
2020 Governmental support requested by British sheep farmers A no-deal Brexit scenario must be covered by long-term cold storage and guaranteed public procurement of lamb.
The British government is asked to hedge the risks for the sheep meat sector in the country in case of a no-deal Brexit. At this time, negotiations are heading to a ban of least 6 months for British agricultural products in the EU single market doubled by an increase in imports for food security reasons.
The situation looks damaging for sheep farmers across the Kingdom, as the National Sheep Association (NSA) representatives declared. Phil Stocker, NSA Chief Executive said: “It would be highly damaging to the UK sheep sector if we ease the flow of imports, something the Government has suggested it would do to keep our manufacturing going, at the same time as the EU delays the approval of products destined for its side of the Channel. If we lose access for UK sheepmeat, even for a few months, and still allow imported lamb to come in, then our markets will quickly become flooded and prices will plummet, with farmers feeling the brunt of it.”
The organisation believes that the only option in that scenario would be to close the doors to sheepmeat imports and focus on getting UK production into the domestic market, informs Farming UK magazine.
"It would give us challenges with seasonality, as lamb production fluctuates at different points in the year but using public procurement markets such as our armed forces, schools and hospitals, and investing in long-term cold storage would allow us to make the most of what would otherwise be a catastrophe," added Stocker.
Listing UK as a third country able to trade with the EU is also important in case of no-deal between the parts. Also, NSA expects that the GBP40 billion (€45.5 billion) "divorce bill", that is subject to negotiation, to be reinvested in the sectors most affected by Brexit.
    Industry 2018-10-09 07:06:28 2025-08-06 07:37:58 Details Edit Delete

2023 Exports of live pigs accounted for only 1.7% of Romania's pork exports before the ASF outbreaks Romania exported only 1.7% live pigs out of the total exports of the Romanian pork industry before the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks took place, said the president of the Romanian Association of Cattle, Sheep and Swine Breeders and Exporters (ACEBOP), Mary-Eugenia Pan?.
"Exports of live pigs from Romania before the outbreak of African swine fever was only 1.7% out of the total. When referring to the small and large animal exports there is a different situation in the case of pigs. Romania exports live animals predominantly to the Middle East as well as to Turkey and recently again to Israel. Since last year our association has a collaboration project with Animals International in Australia and Angels Animals in Germany to easily change our export destinations for livestock in value-added commerce," she said.

The ACEBOP representative added that Romania has a slaughterhouse problem when it comes to sheep and cattle.

"Our main problem is in slaughterhouses. We have very few abattoirs capable of slaughtering sheep and cattle and a very large number of animals At the same time there is a cultural demand. I take Israel as a model and tell you that I pay very well for a beef steak provided that the animal is castrated in a certain way and has all the internal organs intact because they are large consumers of animal organs. And therefore they offer a superior price compared to other buyers, "Mary-Eugenia Pan? explained.
    Industry 2018-10-09 11:52:44 2025-08-06 09:00:07 Details Edit Delete

2033 HKScan launched its poultry product exports to Sweden

The poultry products exported to Sweden are produced at HKScan’s Rauma production unit, the most advanced production facility of its kind in Europe, according to a company statement.

“Swedish consumers have high standards in terms of the quality and origin of the food they eat. I am delighted that HKScan’s Finnish products can meet those demands by bringing responsibly produced Karinäs products to the growing Swedish poultry market. This also marks the launch of farm-born poultry products in Sweden, only one in the market. We have great expectations for this innovation. The feedback from consumers was very promising. Consumers have had an important role in our concept creation process,” states Sofia Hyleén Toresson, EVP Market Sweden.

The poultry meat exported to Sweden is sourced from around 80 of HKScan’s contract farms located mainly in western Finland. The high standard of quality has been the guiding principle of Karinäs farmers since 1966. Examples of the results are that Karinäs poultry is raised totally without antibiotics since 2009, the production is salmonella-free and incidence of campylobacteriosis is minimal. Selected Karinäs farms were among the first in the world to adopt the farm born concept.

The company added that launching these products in the Swedish market gives the local people access to its new innovation: high welfare farm-born poultry that is hatched on the farm where it is raised. It added that the new concept is one additional guarantee of the company's high standard of quality, animal welfare and product safety throughout the farm-to-fork chain.

“Frozen poultry imported from outside Europe continues to play a major role on Swedish dinner plates. Finnish-made Karinäs marks the arrival of a high-quality, responsibly produced alternative for the Swedish market. The launch of Swedish exports is one key step in our renewed strategy and brings notable synergies from cross-border collaboration. The launch of Swedish exports opens new avenues for progressive Finnish farmers and marks a significant step forward for our entire value chain,” says Heli Arantola, EVP Categories & Concepts.

Consumption of poultry meat is rising steadily both in Sweden and Finland but is still below the EU average in both markets. Only around 60% of the poultry meat consumed in Sweden is domestically produced, whereas the corresponding figure for Finland is 80%.
