230 The Belgian meat industry has its own stand at Anuga 2017 VLAM, the Flemish Centre for Agricultural and Fisheries Marketing, will participate at this year's edition of Anuga with its own stand and it will present a broad delegation of Belgian companies that export meat, poultry, rabbit and dairy products.

The Belgian suppliers of fine meat products are in Hall 5.2 C-030 – D039 under the umbrella of Flanders Investment and Trade. VLAM is also present to launch a new campaign for fine meats: 'Artisan fine meat from Belgium'.

Belgium exported nearly 702,000 tons of fresh and frozen pork at an international level in 2016, in terms of value these exports were 1.2 billion euros. Fresh and frozen pork is primarily destined for the German and Polish markets. They represent 36% and 26% of the Belgian export value in pork respectively. Far behind that, in third place, is the United Kingdom which represents 5% of the export value. Belgian companies also export pork meat and pork products to South Korea, China, and Australia as the top three destinations outside of Europe.

Furthermore, the Belgian export of beef shows a rising trend, both in terms of volume and value. In 2016, Belgium exported a total of 150,000 tonnes of beef and veal, worth some 683 million euros. This is a sharp increase from the 124,000 tonnes in 2010. The main buyers were France (26%), Netherlands (25%), Germany (19%) and Italy (11%).

    Events 2017-09-25 10:00:07 2025-07-17 05:51:24 Details Edit Delete
3088 The beef market in Poland drops dramatically In many cases, the prices offered for beef cattle are lower than those obtained for pigs.
The Polish beef market is under pressure, with prices falling constantly as the EU market is oversupplied and exports to third countries are low, according to Farmer magazine. In addition, the beef sector received a serious threat in the form of a trade agreement with the Mercosur countries, under which the European market would accept almost 100,000 tonnes of South American meat. In many cases, beef prices are now lower than those obtained for pigs.
Currently, the price for bulls in class R is in the range of PLN 10.40 - 11 PLN (€2.35 - €2.50) / kg. However, the rates in Class O amount to 10 - 10.6 PLN (approx. €2.35)/ kg. The worst is the price of males bought in live weight, which oscillates between 5.20 - 7.50 PLN (€1.30 - €1.74)/ kg.
A little less, but the heifers were also cheaper. Currently, the rates offered by bets for class R are 10.80 - 13.20 PLN (€2.40 - €3.10)/ kg, and for the class O 10.60 - 12.40 PLN (€2.40 - €2.89)/ kg. For heifers purchased on a livestock weight, farmers can receive from 5 to 7 PLN (€1.17 - €1.65)/ kg.
The rates also fell for cows, with prices around 10 PLN (€2.33)/kg in abattoirs and live weight prices around 5 PLN (€1.17)/kg. Polish farmers are thinking of initiating protests as a response to the Mercosur trade deal, following the example of Irish farmers that have in front of the Dublin Parliament, denouncing the EU's free trade agreement with the Mercosur countries as well as the EU's two-tier language. "They have imposed environmental restrictions on farmers across Europe and we need to operate in compliance with environmental standards. And suddenly Brussels signs an agreement with a country that ignores all of these rules", commented Hugh Doyle one of the leaders of Beef Plan Movement, referring to Brazil, one of the Mercosur Group countries.
    Industry 2019-07-11 06:28:26 2025-07-17 19:43:43 Details Edit Delete
4424 The avian flu situation in France is getting worse There are more than 170 outbreaks reported in the regions bordering Spain.
With a total of 197 outbreaks of avian influenza H5N8 counted at the end of last week, France has become a "scarecrow" for a neighbouring country as 170 of those outbreaks are placed in the regions bordering Spain. Five of these regions are listed in a ministerial decree n which a preventive slaughter of birds could be ordered. These include all the municipalities in the Gers, Landes, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrenees regions, and eleven municipalities in the Lot-et-Garonne region, according to Carnica magazine.
French Agriculture and Food Minister Julien Denormandie recalled that everything possible must be done to stop the spread of bird flu and protect the areas that are still free. Denormandie has described the virus as "extremely contagious among birds" and has insisted on the biosecurity of poultry farms.
To date, around 700,000 poultry, mainly ducks, have been slaughtered on the orders of the French administration after detection of outbreaks or preventively.
Despite the boom in outbreaks in the southwest of the neighbouring country, the situation seems to be stabilized in the rest of the regions affected by the virus since no new cases, domestic or wild, have been registered for 15 days. The first case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N8 was reported in France in mid-November.
    Industry 2021-01-19 06:13:34 2025-07-17 05:53:51 Details Edit Delete
2434 The average consumption of meat in Spain is 4 times a week 25% of the Spaniards are afraid that they eat more meat than they should, according to a new study.
Meat consumption in Spain has fallen steadily in the last 10 years and the latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food shows that last year, Spaniards have eaten about 47 kilos of meat per capita, with 3 kilos less than in 2017.
Health issues and animal welfare are the main reasons for 29% of the Spaniards to reduce their meat intake, reveals a study conducted by Federacion Empresarial de Carnes e Industrias Carnicas (Fecic) along with the Association of manufacturers and distributors (AECOC).
The 2018 report showed that Spanish consumers like to consume meat regularly and 56% said that they did it for the pleasure and enjoyment that comes with it. In addition, 45% said they used it for a balanced diet of proteins and nutrients, and even one in four, for health reasons.
Also, another relevant data in the 2018 report is that the average consumption of meat in Spain is 4 times a week although a quarter of consumers considered that they ate more meat than they should. In the scenario that was drawn, there was a perception of a constant decrease in the consumption of meats, favoured by social pressure and changes in the lifestyle of consumers.
"A report of this type, in which, in addition, focuses on a topic of interest, will allow us to have a history of indicators of the sector, which will help companies to know trends of consumption and the keys of decision of the consumer to be able to adapt thus his strategies and products", declared the general secretary of Fecic, Josep Collado.
The next report on consumer habits in Spain is to be released in March, during the lunch prior to the inauguration of the AECOC Congress of Meat and Processed Products 2019, announced Interempresas magazine.
    Market 2019-01-15 09:54:41 2025-07-17 21:09:35 Details Edit Delete
3081 The Australian red meat industry is eager to sign an FTA with the EU
Representatives of the Australian red meat industry have met with the Ministers for Trade and Agriculture to discuss the evolution of the negotiation process in trade reform with the EU and UK.
The Australia-EU Free Trade Agreement (A-EU FTA) negotiations, a future Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (A-UK FTA) and the status of current market access arrangements were the main topics as the Brexit still raises concerns and the negotiating process between the EU and the US granted the American producers access for a quota of High Quality – Grainfed beef of 35,000 tonnes, followed by Mercosur deal, with a quota of 99,000 tonnes of beef for the South American producers.
For now, the Australian industry successfully advocated the retention of global shared access to the grainfed quota for an extended period. The changes will be phased in over a 7 year period, with a starting volume of 18,500 tonnes and, even if the US succeeded in securing 35,000 tonnes of access from day one, the EU / UK Red Meat Market Access Taskforce (Taskforce) hopes to gain further advantages in a future trade deal with the EU.

"The HQB-GF outcome is a prime example of this partnership; with the Taskforce working alongside Government and successfully advocating an extended phase-in period for changes to the HQB-GF quota. We look forward to continuing to work with the Australian Government to secure a comprehensive and ambitious FTA outcome with the European Union, and when the UK is ready, in pursuit of liberalized access to the UK, post Brexit", mentioned Andrew McDonald, Incoming Taskforce chairman.
Although Australian red meat exports to Europe complement local production, both in terms of seasonality and the market segment that Australian product fills, the access in this market is seen as hard to access due to low volume import quotas and high above-quota tariffs. In terms of country-specific access, Australian exporters only have access to a 7,150-tonnes high-quality beef quota (with a 20% in quota tariff) and a 19,186-tonne combined sheepmeat/goatmeat quota (0% in quota tariff).
"The FTA negotiations present a real opportunity to modernise our access conditions in the region and address the uneven playing field we currently face, especially in comparison to the preferential access other global red meat exporters have secured with the EU", explained Mr. McDonald.
According to an MLA projection, the EU market worth AU$400 million in opportunities for the Australian red meat industry.
    Market 2019-07-09 09:06:10 2025-07-17 17:26:34 Details Edit Delete
401 The Australian Government signed an FTA with Peru The Australian Government on Friday signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Peru, an agreement that will offer new export opportunities for Australian beef, goatmeat and sheepmeat.

According to Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), the current tariffs of 11-17% on beef will be eliminated either on entry into force of the agreement or within five years; the 9% tariff on sheepmeat/goatmeat being eliminated on entry into force; tariff applicable to live animal exports and edible offals bound at 0% and the elimination of tariffs for further processed meat products either entry into force or within five years.

MLA said that protocols/certification still need to be established with Peru in order for trade to flow. "This process is currently underway with dialogue between Australian and Peruvian government authorities to establish the required import protocols for Australian red meat," according to the MLA's statement.

MLA says that the liberalisation of the Peruvian import regime achieved via PAFTA will potentially provide an opportunity for Australia's meat industry to access a new export market.

Furthermore, beef consumption in Peru is forecast to triple by 2020 and its sheepmeat consumption by 20% by 2025. MLA said the Austrlian meat industry will be in a position, pending the finalisation of the certification arrangements, to respond to future inquiries from Peru’s retail and foodservice sectors – with a Peruvian supermarket chain previously expressing interest in sourcing Australian product.

According to MLA, PAFTA will also provide "a useful stepping stone to securing closer economic relations with the Pacific Alliance group of countries (Chile, Columbia, Mexico and Peru) and thereby help expand industry’s engagement in Latin America."

Photo Source: Wikimedia Commons/ Fernando Rodríguez Barboza
    Market 2017-11-14 10:21:20 2025-07-17 08:17:37 Details Edit Delete
2813 The Asian grocery market to worth $4264 billion in 4 years In 2023, the value of that market is going to be almost the same as Europe and North America combined, says IGD Asia.
Asia, the largest regional grocery market in the world, is expected to grow by a CAGR of 6% until 2023, says new study from IGD Asia. China, India and Indonesia will be the biggest contributors to the region's top-line growth, accounting for 74% of new sales added by 2023.
"Asia will continue to extend its position as the world's largest grocery market over the next five years, contributing more additional sales to the global grocery market than the next three fastest-growing regions in value change terms – Europe, Africa and Latin America", said Nick Miles, Head of Asia-Pacific at IGD.
In 2018, the Asian grocery market was worth $3126 billion. In 4 years, $1139 billion will be added in this market, reaching a total value of $4264 billion ( 37% share of the global grocery market).
There are five countries that will contribute to this expansion in particular. China will extend its position as the region's leading grocery market. Despite growth slowing, it is still expected to have a CAGR of 6% until 2023. Nick Miles says: "Online retailers will have an increasing influence on China's grocery landscape, with partnerships fuelling the digitisation of retail. Retailers' geographic focus is shifting as first-tier cities become saturated and as such, they are looking to establish a presence in lower-tier cities. Also, new manned and unmanned store concepts are likely to emerge and change the face of physical retail."
India, the second-largest market in the region will witness a growth of 11% in grocery sales. "In India, traditional retail continues to make up more than 95% of the market. The traditional 12 million Kirana stores will remain an integral part of the retail landscape, but modern retail chains will expand with a focus on establishing themselves in major cities and urban centres. Online will be one of the most significant modern trade channels, with new retailer partnerships improving supply chain and customer reach", says Mr Miles.
In Japan, Asia's third-largest grocery market, a declining population and low spending growth mean that the grocery market will have a slower CAGR of 1% to 2023. Nick Miles says: "Collaboration and consolidation between retailers continues to be a key driver for growth in Japan, but its impact on the total retail market will be insignificant. Retailers' core grocery formats will face stronger competition from drugstores, discount and speciality stores selling more food and grocery products. Technology and automation will form part of the solution to support the country's ageing population."

Indonesia, the fourth-largest market, is set to have a CAGR of 8% to 2023. "In Indonesia, traditional trade will make up 80% of the grocery market in 2023, with suppliers and mom and pop stores better able to service the channel. Minimarket operators Indomaret and Alfamart will continue to dominate modern trade, growing their networks and investing in digital capabilities. The growing influence of online from both existing retailers and investment by Alibaba and JD.ID in the market will also play a role. The modernisation of traditional trade remains a huge growth opportunity, particularly beyond major cities and across the outer islands," according to the analyst.

As the fifth-largest Asian market, South Korea will have a CAGR of 5% and see challenging growth in hypermarkets and supermarkets, currently the country's two largest food and consumer goods channels. "The importance of convenience in South Korea is set to rapidly increase as retailers continue to open lots of new stores and invest in existing operations. South Korea has a high-tech and digitally engaged society and the world's highest market share for online grocery, meaning retailers will continue to invest in operations to stay ahead," says Nick Miles.

According to the study, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and the Philippines will also see some of the fastest growth in the region, while Hong Kong is to grow at a slower pace, similar to Japan. Convenience stores and online will be the main channels to influence the market thanks to investment expected in these sectors.
    Retail 2019-04-15 01:47:33 2025-07-17 20:58:34 Details Edit Delete
6728 The Argentine steer, among the most expensive in the world The rise in prices that was generated during August pushed up the prices of the steer, which in the last month became more expensive in dollars, well above the increases in the rest of the world. The Rosario Livestock Market (Rosgan) analyzed these increases, which place exports in a new scenario. Thus, Argentine is more expensive in dollars compared to its main competitors.
In August, the average price of the heavy steer for export (over 480 kilos) went from being worth US$ 3.77 per kilo to US$ 4.98 per kilo, an increase of 32% In the rest of the international livestock map , the increases are located below this range. While Australia remarked 12.5%, Brazil and Uruguay adjusted 10%, Europe 6% and the United States just 1.4%.

The fall of the peso against the dollar is a measure difficult to assimilate for the cattle chain. "After the devaluation, Argentine, far from gaining competitiveness, became more expensive in dollars compared to the rest of the origins," they warned from Rosgan.

The course of the cow was also similar, with an increase measured in dollars that oscillated between 28% and 33%, while the rest of the international markets adjusted their prices downward. "This situation, added to the lower supply of cattle that had been registered, exacerbated the shortage of merchandise, which is why many refrigerators during the last week began to reduce their pace of work", they said.

In the case of steers, the Rosgan considered that the shortage is even more marked than in cows. For this time of the year, they explained that the slaughter of this category should show better numbers, but everything allows us to infer that in the coming months the shortage of heavy animals will be more evident.

"In this context, the industry will face difficult months that will probably lead to further reducing its level of operations as a defensive measure, until the market naturally manages to find a new equilibrium level", they concluded.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-09-08 00:10:10 2025-07-17 14:54:39 Details Edit Delete
476 The Argentine beef continues to be the most prestigious in Europe The Institute for the Promotion of Argentine Beef (IPCVA) presented the results of a market study in the European Union where consumers think that Argentine beef is the best. 5338 The animal feed market in Thailand to grow in the following years The Asian state is one of the major players in the global poultry market and is expected to increase beef exports as well.
The Thai animal feed market is projected to witness a compound annual growth rate of 2.96% to grow to $6.985 billion by 2026, from $5.697 billion in 2019, according to a recent report from Research And Markets.

With a significant increase in the export of Thai chicken in recent years, together with the opening of new export destinations such as Japan and the EU, the market for animal feed is forecast to grow exponentially in the coming years. For instance, according to the Thai Department of Customs, the country's chicken meat export has increased from nearly 546,000 tonnes in 2014 to 950,000 tonnes in 2019.

Growing consumption of meat and other livestock products

Animal feed is considered as the demand-led 'livestock revolution' which is taking place because of a rapidly growing population, income growth, and increasing urbanization. Growing consumption of meat and other end products such as milk, eggs across the different provinces is considered as one of the prime factors driving the market growth during the forecast period. In addition, a growing number of supermarkets, convenience stores, and quick restaurant services have impacted the demand for meat and other products which is further driving the growth of the market in the coming years. For instance, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the number of convenience stores in Thailand has increased from 11,797 in 2015 to over 14,403 in 2019. In August 2021, according to European traders, a group of importers in Thailand had ordered and issued an international tender to buy and purchase up to 139,500 tones of animal feed wheat. The traders had stated that the shipments had to be completed by December 2021.

Cattle is projected to hold a notable share in the animal feed market

By Livestock, Thailand's animal feed market is divided into aquatic animals, cattle, poultry, and others. Cattle and poultry are expected to hold a significant share in the country's animal feed market. The prime factor driving the segment demand for animal feed is the growing number of cattle populations in the country. Thailand has the largest cattle population in the ASEAN region and is a significant exporter of beef and dairy products. A rising number of cattle heads and heard is expected to drive the market growth, analysts said.

COVID-19 impact on Thailand animal feed market

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a decline in meat consumption in Thailand, which was a major factor for the decrease in the growth of the animal feed market in the year 2020. The decrease in the number of foreign tourists, a closedown of hotels and other hospitality businesses, and the government's imposition of stringent measures on social distancing were some of the reasons behind low meat consumption in the country.

According to USDA, foreign tourists in Thailand went from 39.9 million tourists prior to the pandemic to 6.7 million in 2020. Furthermore, the trade restrictions implemented by countries all over the world led to reduced feed imports from the other countries. However, the country increased its domestic production of feed materials such as corn which supported the growth of the market during the pandemic. Furthermore, an increase in the price for broken rice, which is used majorly as swine feed in the country, was seen in 2020.

    Industry 2022-03-04 12:59:20 2025-07-17 17:22:01 Details Edit Delete
6054 The actual size of European livestock farms Europe’s farms offer a great diversity of food products from one region to another, so the average farm size is quite difficult to define, according to an article published by the European Livestock Voice.
What is known for sure is that family farming has always been a cornerstone of agricultural activity in the European Union. 3809 Thailand's poultry consumption down 50% The SE Asian country looks for new export destinations as the domestic market is feeling the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.
Poultry breeders and exporters are urging the Thai government to seal trade deals with the EU and UK in order to ease the access of poultry products in these markets. Currently, Thai officials are looking desperately to open new markets for poultry exports as domestic consumption has dropped by 50% in just a couple of months.
During the first couple of months of this year, Thai poultry exports have increased by 7.21%. However, the coronavirus outbreaks in Asia, the US, and the EU may result in a decline of 5% in exports. At the same time, the prices in the domestic market have decreased by 30%, threatening the profit of poultry farmers and processors.
Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit held discussions with private chicken meat providers and exporters such as CP, Betagro and Thai Broiler Processing Exporters Association to evaluate the export situation.

They urged the ministry to seal free trade agreements with the EU and Britain, fixing chicken meat import quota at around 280,000 to 320,000 tonnes a year and to seek lower British import tariffs from US$1,000 a tonne, reported The Star newspaper.

The ministry also was asked to seek new markets in Japan and to lobby China to approve Thai processed-chicken factories in order to export processed products and expand the duck meat market. The private sector requested the ministry to establish new markets in South Korea, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan.
For the Thai poultry producers, Japan, Britain, China, Netherlands and South Korea are seen as key export markets for chicken meat. However, exporters believe that they could increase their presence in markets such as the US, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, Sweden, Germany, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, France, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Iraq, Angola, South Africa, Philippines and Taiwan. Chicken meat production in Thailand reached 2.86 million tonnes last year, ranking the country as the world's eight largest producer. Around 40% of the production was exported.
    Industry 2020-04-24 07:50:42 2025-07-17 05:55:10 Details Edit Delete
620 Thailand's pig industry is slowly stepping out of the crisis The second week of 2018 brought an increase in price for the live animals
Thai pig industry is slowly recovering from a price crises that affected producers all over the country. Pig prices in Thailand edged higher in the second week of January 2018 to THB 45-50/kg (USD 1.36 – 1.52) live after it was at THB 30-35/kg (USD 0.9 – 1.0) in December 2017. This a sign of the fixing the oversupply that unbalanced the market in the last year, considers Paul Anderson, Genesus Director for South-East Asia Market, in a recent analysis.

At the end of the fiscal year 2017, in September, official data from Thailand referring to pig production in the country mentioned 10,191,784 pigs during September 2016 – 2017. The number is divided into native pigs 650,972 heads, terminal boars 73,493 heads, sows 861,553 heads and commercial pigs 8,605,766 heads.

Many of the producers have adapted to new selling techniques offering portioned pork directly to customers and end-users in order to reduce their losses. Despite the decrease in prices in live pigs, retail prices remain unchanged, particularly in high-value cuts such as belly and loin, products that can minimize losses from live pig sales significantly. As an effect of this new strategy, the number of cutting plants and pork shops across Thailand has multiplied.

At this point, the price for live pigs are under the cost of production, which is estimated to be around THB 50/kg (USD 1.52) but the forecast for 2018 estimated that the price would surpass this level in the second or third quarter of the year.

The secondary effect that took place in Thai pork market was the tendency to slaughter heavier pigs. Average slaughter weight in the country ranges from 95-100kg but the crisis has pushed the slaughter weight at 115-120kg.

    Market 2018-01-17 10:06:38 2025-07-17 07:48:28 Details Edit Delete
1053 Thailand's chicken meat shipments reach China Thailand's first shipment of 14 containers of chicken meat valued at $1.1 million have arrived in Yunnan Province, China, according to asian-agribiz.

Thailand was banned from exporting poultry meat and products to China after the country was hit by an avian influenza outbreak back in 2004.

Ren Yisheng, China’s Consul General to Thailand said: “China has been closely following the development of control systems of the poultry industry.”

Chicken meat shipments account for the largest share of 85% from Thailand's total meat exports, according to Niwat Sutemechaikul, Deputy Secretary of Thailand’s Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry.

Seven Thai companies received approval to export frozen chicken meat to China.
    Market 2018-04-05 06:33:33 2025-07-17 17:07:00 Details Edit Delete
3552 Thailand takes the role of main supplier of live pigs in SE Asia Demand for live pigs is increasing in Vietnam and Cambodia as commercial farms are trying to rebuild their herds.
Thailand has become one of the main suppliers of live pigs in Southeast Asia and reported a peak of $2.6/kg in live pig prices in January 2020. Growing demand for live pigs in Cambodia and Vietnam is motivating Thai pig farmers to boost their exports across the border. Over the Chinese New Year period, live pig prices in Vietnam hovered to $3.50/kg and $2.80/kg in Cambodia, according to the latest Genesus Global Market report.
However, the Thai government takes action to limit the live pig exports aiming to curb down the prices. "The Thai Swine Raisers Association estimated that the pig population in Thailand was at about 950,000 heads in 2019, 15% lower than the previous year. The farmers reduced the number of breeding stock throughout last year due to concerns over African Swine Fever, which is hitting neighboring Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Thailand is expected to produce 22 million market pigs this year.
The association said pig supplies in Thailand would continue to be tight over the next few months as the summer is coming. Rising temperature leads to the slow growth of pigs and a shortage of water will raise the production cost further," reported Paul Anderson, General Manager South East Asia and International Sales Manager for Genesus Inc.
That would create a larger gap in Vietnam's pork supply as the country managed to keep the prices under control by importing pigs from Thailand. "Pork shortage has been gripping the country following months of excess pork supply due to panic slaughtering of the herd, which has the effect of depressing prices. It is believed that the existing pork supply shortage is likely to persist over 2020. This would also put upside pressure on the prices of other animal protein. Pork production is likely to only recover somewhat closer to 2023.

Food inflation almost doubled to 9.2% in December 2019, from 5.6% in November 2019, on the back of rocketing pork prices due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever, which has affected all 63 provinces. High inflation also weighs on Vietnam’s export competitiveness,", added Mr. Anderson.
    Industry 2020-01-27 06:29:36 2025-07-17 13:46:08 Details Edit Delete
