1640 Best-before dates for pork products to be extended in Japan Japanese officials are considering new rules for the industry in order to become competitive on the export markets.
Low pork consumption in Japan is forcing the local producers to focus on the export markets in order to protect their businesses.
Nevertheless, there is a problem with best-before dates of domestic pork products that are making Japanese pork uncompetitive abroad. Since 1995, Japan has imposed a best-before date of 20 days for widely traded vacuum-packed products that need to be preserved at zero degrees, which is shorter when compared to the United States or Canadian products.

According to Japan Times magazine, the agriculture and health ministries, related organizations and other groups will set up a study panel to draw up a report on the issue, possibly before the end of this summer.
The new markets targeted by Japanese pork producers are Europe and North America. "Extending best-before dates will make distribution by ship more active", declared one official source. For now, the best-before dates set 23 years ago is limiting the exports to Hong Kong and Singapore as main markets in the area.
    Industry 2018-07-23 14:09:40 2025-08-02 11:03:40 Details Edit Delete

1649 A no-deal Brexit scenario could shake the British poultry industry The British Poultry Council has warned the authorities that the industry is 60% dependent on the EU workforce.
UK poultry businesses fear that they would lose essential workforce if the no-deal Brexit scenario goes through. “The British poultry meat sector is incredibly dependent on non-UK labour. 1651 Difficult times: Brexit to create a shortage of meat inspectors A company that provides veterinarians for the Food Standards Agency is already talking about a crisis point.
Meat inspectors are going to be hard to find in the UK after Brexit as there is already a shortage on the labour market in this field, warns the company that provides veterinarians for the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

There is already a "crisis point" reached in the vet business as 98% of the workforce in the field come from outside of the country and 20 vets a month are considered lost due to their return to the countries of origin, explained Jason Aldiss, managing director of Eville & Jones, in a BBC interview.
Official Veterinarians (OVs) audit and inspect meat processing sites, certify imports and exports, and carry out official disease control measures such as TB tests. "Our recruitment programme is running at full pace and yet we're not able to keep up with the loss of vet staff that are moving out. Brexit has hit as far as we're concerned - we are at crisis. My company has already lost £2.5m because of paralysis in government, lack of direction and the lack of an understanding about the real implications of what is happening now", declared Aldiss.
In his opinion, vets should be included on the UK Shortage Occupation List but no real action has been taken so far in this direction.
"The impact of EU Exit on the veterinary workforce is something we are considering as part of our wider work looking at potential audit and assurance arrangements after the UK leaves the EU", an FSA spokesman said.
Nevertheless, the industry looks worried about the impact of Brexit on the businesses. 63% of the workers in meat processing plants are from other EU countries and the poultry industry has a ratio of 60% dependence on the non-UK workforce. 1657 Trump administration announces $12 billion tariff relief program Trade wars with China, Mexico, Canada are taking their toll from the taxpayer's money.
A program of $12 billion will support the farmers who are now bearing the brunt of the trade wars open by president Trump. Tariffs imposed as retaliatory measures by China, Mexico, and Canada have been called illegal by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue.

"Today we're formally announcing that the Trump administration will be taking several actions to assist farmers in response to the trade damage caused by the illegal retaliatory tariffs that have been imposed on the United States in the past few months. The programs we’re announcing today are a firm statement that other nations cannot bully our agriculture producers to force the United States to cave in", declared Perdue, according to Drovers magazine.
The funds will be channelled through three programs administered by USDA under the Commodity Credit Corporation Charter Act. According to Perdue, the program's value is "in direct line" with an estimated $11 billion impact that tariffs are having on the agricultural sector.
Payments are expected to roll in September but no one knows how the program will work exactly.
Nevertheless, Jim Wiesemeyer, Pro Farmer’s Washington policy analyst, declared that the funds may not be enough to cover the real losses that American farmers will endure in the future due to president Trump trade tactics. "Those self-inflicted wounds caused some countries, including Japan and others, to invest in agriculture and infrastructure development in Brazil, Argentina and elsewhere, helping Brazil become a major export challenger to the United States", he said.
Since April, US farmers, producers and exporters are facing tariffs ranging from 10% to 62% imposed by China, Mexico and Canada on different agri-food products as retaliation measures to the duties added by Washington on some industrial products.
    Industry 2018-07-26 07:00:58 2025-08-01 12:18:03 Details Edit Delete
1658 Automatic pig carcass scanner gets homologated in Spain and Poland The system developed by an Irish company can classify 900 pigs per hour and provides information on the composition of the carcass.
GM Steel Fabricators, an Ireland-based company specialized in producing equipment and services for abattoirs and processing plants of all sizes, announced that its Automatic pig carcass scanner was homologated by the competent bodies in two European countries.
In June, PIGSCAN system successfully carried out the trials required by the regulators in Spain and Poland, reports Feedstuffs magazine.
"PIGSCAN has been developed in collaboration with Lenz Instruments from Barcelona and with financial assistance from the EU 7th Framework Programme for Research & Development in the Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology Industries.
PIGSCAN technology will give a simple result for lean meat vs fat yields in pigs, which with knowledge of the carcass weight will produce a volume of lean meat yield from the carcass.
With additional funding from the Horizon 2020 Programme, we hope to commercialise the technology, which is intended for small and medium-sized meat processors", informs the company.
The automatic scanner has been designed for the classification of pig carcasses in a vertical position, which facilitates the integration of the system in the slaughter line and significantly reduces its integration costs. "The grading of the four prime cuts still in the whole carcass will allow the slaughterhouse to optimize their subsequent production processes (cutting, further processing, labelling, and packing) and to ensure that the best raw material/the-right cuts are destined for the right process or commercial product', mentioned the producer.
The system is designed to be used without an operator and will require minimum modification of the processing line. PIGSCAN employs a contact-less inspection method that preserves the integrity and physical characteristics of the meat and avoids the risk of cross-contamination. Besides Lenz Instruments Barcelona, the project has attracted partners like Vion Food, Danish Technological Institute and Institut de Recerca i Tecnologies Agroalimentaries (IRTA) from Spain.
    Technology 2018-07-26 06:04:28 2025-08-02 23:57:35 Details Edit Delete
