1635 | Pork production in the UK down in June | UK's pork production in June reached 71,800 tonnes, down 1% compared with a year earlier, according to latest figures from Defra, says the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). |
The small decline in output is likely influenced by the additional week day in June 2017, and on a like-for-like basis, production would still have been higher.

Nonetheless, according to AHDB analyst, Bethan Wilkins, supplies in recent months have been tighter than earlier in the year. Production was less than 1% above year earlier levels across May-June, compared to a 6% growth in the first four months of the year.

"The modest decline in absolute production during June was driven by a 2% drop in clean pig slaughterings, which totalled 831,700 head. England and Wales recorded the largest decrease (-3%, -22,000 head), while throughputs in both Scotland and Northern Ireland were actually up slightly when compared with June 2017, by 9% (+2,000 head) and 2% (+3,000 head) respectively," Wilkins added.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-23 06:21:01 | 2025-07-31 18:01:31 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1637 | 1.1 million tonnes of meat is stored in the US warehouses | Production is too high, exports are falling and the cold-storage warehouses are getting filled up. |
Overproduction and a fall in exports could seriously damage the US meat industry. According to the US Department of Agriculture, the industry is expected to produce over 46 million tonnes of meat the year and that could turn into a real blow for the producers as the exports are falling due to the trade wars with China, Canada and Mexico, reports Wall Street Journal.
Pork exports to China are already down by 18% due to a 62% duty imposed by Beijing and Mexico has also added a 20% tariff for pork products originated in the US.
Federal data expected to be released this week will show a meat inventory of more than 1.1 million tonnes. That could put pressure on prices and severely reduce the profits for producers. In fact, it could produce "one of the biggest corrections we’ve seen in the industry in several years", as Rabobank's protein analyst Christine McCracken said.
The effects are already present in the market as some of the hog farmers and pork processors have put on hold a series of investments, such as Maschhoffs LLC's $30 million plan for to expand its breeding operations and upgrade truck washes and other biosecurity measures.
Ken Maschhoff, the company’s chairman, admitted that is considering moving a part of its operations to Eastern Europe or South America. If the exports are not rising in the next few months, most of the meat stored in the warehouses is going to turn into pet-food.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-23 10:28:03 | 2025-07-31 15:53:48 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1640 | Best-before dates for pork products to be extended in Japan | Japanese officials are considering new rules for the industry in order to become competitive on the export markets. |
Low pork consumption in Japan is forcing the local producers to focus on the export markets in order to protect their businesses.
Nevertheless, there is a problem with best-before dates of domestic pork products that are making Japanese pork uncompetitive abroad. Since 1995, Japan has imposed a best-before date of 20 days for widely traded vacuum-packed products that need to be preserved at zero degrees, which is shorter when compared to the United States or Canadian products.

According to Japan Times magazine, the agriculture and health ministries, related organizations and other groups will set up a study panel to draw up a report on the issue, possibly before the end of this summer.
The new markets targeted by Japanese pork producers are Europe and North America. "Extending best-before dates will make distribution by ship more active", declared one official source. For now, the best-before dates set 23 years ago is limiting the exports to Hong Kong and Singapore as main markets in the area.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-23 14:09:40 | 2025-08-01 21:08:15 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1649 | A no-deal Brexit scenario could shake the British poultry industry | The British Poultry Council has warned the authorities that the industry is 60% dependent on the EU workforce. |
UK poultry businesses fear that they would lose essential workforce if the no-deal Brexit scenario goes through. “The British poultry meat sector is incredibly dependent on non-UK labour. 1651 | Difficult times: Brexit to create a shortage of meat inspectors | A company that provides veterinarians for the Food Standards Agency is already talking about a crisis point. |
Meat inspectors are going to be hard to find in the UK after Brexit as there is already a shortage on the labour market in this field, warns the company that provides veterinarians for the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

There is already a "crisis point" reached in the vet business as 98% of the workforce in the field come from outside of the country and 20 vets a month are considered lost due to their return to the countries of origin, explained Jason Aldiss, managing director of Eville & Jones, in a BBC interview.
Official Veterinarians (OVs) audit and inspect meat processing sites, certify imports and exports, and carry out official disease control measures such as TB tests. "Our recruitment programme is running at full pace and yet we're not able to keep up with the loss of vet staff that are moving out. Brexit has hit as far as we're concerned - we are at crisis. My company has already lost £2.5m because of paralysis in government, lack of direction and the lack of an understanding about the real implications of what is happening now", declared Aldiss.
In his opinion, vets should be included on the UK Shortage Occupation List but no real action has been taken so far in this direction.
"The impact of EU Exit on the veterinary workforce is something we are considering as part of our wider work looking at potential audit and assurance arrangements after the UK leaves the EU", an FSA spokesman said.
Nevertheless, the industry looks worried about the impact of Brexit on the businesses. 63% of the workers in meat processing plants are from other EU countries and the poultry industry has a ratio of 60% dependence on the non-UK workforce.
