1597 | Oceana blames Italy for turning a blind eye to illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing | The report mentions that Italian vessels have cumulated more than 10,000 hours of illegal fishing activity in the Mediterranean Sea. |
Governments in the Mediterranean area are turning a blind eye to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices, said a recent report from Oceana.
The biggest offender seems to be Italy, who's trawler-equipped vessels have accumulated more than 10,000 hours of illegal fishing activity in the Strait of Sicily where an area has been established to protect young hake populations as the stock is already overfished. Trawling in the area is prohibited.
According to Oceana's report, the actual amount of IUU may be even higher, as some vessels could have turned off their identification systems, reports Seafood Source magazine.
“While Mediterranean governments and their leaders are committing globally to fight pirate fishing under the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the very same governments are turning a blind eye to potential cases in their own Mediterranean Sea. Information gathered by Oceana indicates that fishing vessels that can easily be identified are blatantly violating the law in fisheries-restricted areas. They’re doing nothing to uphold the law.”, declared Lasse Gustavsson, executive director of Oceana Europe.
Another report released by UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) declared Mediterranean and Black Sea as the most unsustainable fisheries in the world.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-16 07:11:10 | 2025-08-02 02:22:35 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1598 | The US will once again be able to export lamb to Japan | Japan has lifted the ban on the import of meat and meat products from sheep (including lamb) and goat from the US for the first time in 14 years, according to USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. |
Japan has banned these products after the United States was hit by a bovine spongiform encephalopathy outbreak back in December 2003.

“Japan was a primary market for U.S. lamb before losing access, so obviously our lamb producers and the lamb industry are very excited about this opportunity to again export our quality products to an upscale market,” said US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Chair Dennis Stiffler, president of the Texas division of Halperns’ Purveyors of Steak and Seafood and former chief executive officer of Mountain States Rosen, a livestock producer-owned processor and distributor of lamb and veal products.

In 2017, Japan imported 22,192 metric tons of sheep and goat meat from the world valued at $169 million. Imports came primarily from Oceania, with Australia accounting for 61% of Japan’s imports and New Zealand accounting for 36%.

According to USMEF, through May 2018, imports were 43% ahead of last year’s pace in value at $95 million, while volume was up 28% to 12,265 metric tons.

In the past 14 years, the value of U.S. exports of sheep and goat meat to the world has more than doubled, growing from $7 million in 2003 to $15 million in 2017. 1599 | Irish agencies start Knowledge Transfer series of events | Most retailers and foodservice providers across Europe want products that are part of a quality assurance scheme, according to a research carried out by Bord Bia. |
A series of events for Knowledge Transfer to farmers is to start in Ireland next week as a common initiative of Bord Bia and Teagasc. The two Irish agencies will support the local farmers in preparation for farm audits during a series of farm walk events in the coming months.
The first such event takes place in Ballina, Co. Mayo on July 23 on the farm of Fergal Doyle, Tubberavine, Lahardane, Co. Mayo, informs Bord Bia.
Securing the new markets is a complex task and a new research carried out by Bord Bia found that most retailers and foodservice providers across Europe want products that are part of a quality assurance scheme.
The events are meaning to show the Irish producers the importance of the Quality Assurance (QA) scheme and Origin Green programme in meeting the demands of food buyers and consumers for independently verified assurances around traceability, sustainability and animal welfare.
"This is hugely important and gives Irish farmers a real advantage because many are part of such a scheme, which validates what they do every day. International buyers and consumers today want assurances on a number of key issues such as animal welfare, traceability, production systems and sustainability claims, so involvement in quality and sustainability schemes really gives Irish farmers an edge and a connection with consumers.", said Mick Houlihan, Quality Assurance Manager at Bord Bia.
Farmers’ involvement in Bord Bia’s Quality Assurance and Sustainable Assurance schemes, including Origin Green, is strengthening Ireland’s reputation abroad as a world-class producer of food. The walks will provide farmers with greater insights to Bord Bia’s Sustainable Beef and Lamb Assurance Scheme (SBLAS) audit, emphasising the importance of audit compliance. The need for farmers to record medicine usage accurately is part of the audit requirements.
"From Teagasc’s point of view, we are delighted because Bord Bia is directly involved with promoting Irish beef as a premium product to markets abroad. This ties in very well with what we, in Teagasc, are doing also. Our clients are Bord Bia’s clients and, at the end of the day, we want to work with Bord Bia to help sell Irish beef at the highest level. We export 90 per cent of our beef, full traceability is so important and it is essential that any medicines used are recorded correctly", explained Aidan Murray, Teagasc beef specialist. Subsequent walks will take place in the next months on farms located in Donegal, South Tipperary, East Cork and Louth/Meath, according to a press release from Bord Bia.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-16 10:31:42 | 2025-08-02 00:26:37 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1600 | Vietnam expects its tra fish exports to China to increase | The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) says the reduction in import taxes implemented by China on tra fish will help Vietnamese producers boost their exports to this country that represents the largest market for Vietnamese tra fish. |
At the end of May, China has announced a reduction in import taxes for 221 aquatic products from member states of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

According to VASEP, from July 1, China reduced import tariffs from 10% to 7% for tra fish fillets and another reduction from 12% to 7% for tariffs on fresh and frozen tra fish.

VASEP says this measure will help lift tra fish exports through official channels instead of cross-border trade, which will exempt goods from a 17% value added tax and import tax.

Furthermore, analysts at VASEP consider that the current trade war between China and the US represents a chance for the Vietnamese fish producers to boost their tra fish exports to these two markets.

Secretary General of VASEP Truong Dinh Hoe said tra fish could be used for hundreds of recipes so the domestic tra fish sector could increase export of added-value products into China.

Also, VASEP statistics showed that tra fish shipments to China have surged by 21-35% annually in the past five years.
The Chinese market imported $174.2 million worth of Vietnamese tra fish between January and May, making it the biggest currency earner among exports to China.

Last year, China became the fourth largest importer of Vietnamese aquatic products with a value of $1.33 billion, accounting for 15% of the total. In the first half of this year, seafood shipments to China and Hong Kong were estimated to exceed $586.4 million, surpassing the EU to become the third largest importer behind the US and Japan.
| 1 | Market | 2018-07-16 10:36:44 | 2025-08-01 01:45:36 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1602 | Russia's meat imports down 1.7-fold in H1 2018 | Russia imported 1.7 times less meat in the first half of this year compared to the similar period from 2017, down to 203.5 thousand tons, according to the Federal Customs Service, as reported by Meatinfo.ru. |
In the first six months of 2018, pork imports amounted 36.3 thousand tons, down from 147.7 thousand tons in January-June last year.

Russia's poultry meat imports amounted to 32.8 thousand tons in the mentioned period, down from 52.6 thousand tons in the first half of 2017.

Beef imports decreased from 152.6 thousand tons in January-June 2017 to 134.4 thousand tons in the first half of this year.

Including the country's meat trade with countries from the Eurasian Economic Union, imports were at the level of 322.5 thousand tons down from 433.2 thousand tons a year earlier, according to the National Union of Pig breeders (NSS) estimates.

Yury Kovalev, CEO of the NSS, said that by the end of 2018, the volume of Russia's meat imports will be significantly lower than 1 million tons. Still, Kovalev considers that a level of 5-10% domestic consumption will be covered by pork imports.

"No country with a developed sector of the agro-industrial complex wants to completely get rid of food imports. The main goal is a large number of exports with a positive balance (Brazil, Canada), well, or at least with zero balance (US and EU)," Kovalev explained. "I think that even here Russia has an ambitious but realistic goal - to enter the top-10 world agro-industrial exporters, having at least a zero foreign trade balance."

On the other hand, Russia meat exports as of July 8 were 29.4% higher than a year earlier (excluding trade with countries from the Eurasian Economic Union) - reaching 107.3 thousand tons. In shipments, poultry predominated, amounting to 68.2 thousand tons (+ 31.8% compared to the same period from 2017). Sales of pork abroad increased by 24.5% to 36.5 thousand tonnes, beef from 1.8 thousand tonnes to 2.6 thousand tonnes. The NSS estimates the volume of external sales taking into account the countries from the Eurasian Economic Union at 149.1 thousand tons compared to 104.5 thousand tons in the first half of 2017.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-16 12:01:35 | 2025-07-29 17:59:08 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1604 | Spaniards are looking for free-salt and fat chorizos | The Center for Agri-Food Research and Technology of Aragon (CITA) is developing research on the production of healthier sausages. |
A new research dedicated to healthier cured raw meat products is developed in Spain. The Center for Agri-Food Research and Technology of Aragon (CITA) is looking to reduce the levels of fat and salt in the chorizos (Spanish sausages), reports CdeComunicacion portal.
The mission is assumed by Begona Panea, researcher of the Animal Production and Health Unit, and the funding is supported by the Teruel Investment Fund (FITE) plan.
At this time, the research team has reduced the salt levels by replacing sodium chloride with other salts, suitable for hypertensive patients. To replace the fat, textured soy has been used. The project is a continuation of the FITE last year, in which potato or gelatin was used as substitutes for fat and special salts as substitutes for salt.

"The project tries to get sausages, in this case, chorizos, healthier for the consumer. Consumers are concerned about their health and one of the problems is that the sausages have a lot of fat and salt. The recommendations of the WHO are in the sense of reducing the lower consumption of salt and fat in these products. What we are trying is to obtain new formulations that allow us to have some sausages with good taste, but healthier", explained Begona Panea.
The new products are delivered in different formats and sizes and the researchers have initiated a series of visual assessments with different opinion groups to know the preferences and tastes of the final consumer in order to adapt to market trends.
In the Spanish market, there is no sausage that combines the reduction of salt and the change in the lipid profile. Only four or five brands make sausages low in salt and in some cases, it is impossible to know what the salt content of the product is.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-17 07:00:21 | 2025-08-02 00:13:11 | Details Edit Delete | ||
